I'm about to order the Ruger GP-100. I want the blue, 3" magnum. I'm getting a little confused though because the only 3" I'm seeing with a model number is the stainless that I don't want. If you check out the site, you'll see what I mean: www.ruger.com

Shrouded, half shrouded -- what does mean? What should I tell the shop regarding the model -- I told him GP100 3" blue magnum. Shouldn't that be enough?

Half shrouded means the underlug only goes halfway down the barrel. Shrouded means the underlug goes to the end of the barrel. I'd go shrouded, but that's only me-I like the full shrouded look. I had a GP100 .357 shrouded in stainless-it was a great gun. Why blued? Stainless is a bit more forgiving of the elements.

If I wanted stainless I could get any smith and wesson. I want a handsome looking blued gun -- which is my father's favorite color and I'll be getting it for him.

Ruger has discontinued the blued 3-inch GP100 and never offered the blue one with the half-shroud (which, by the way, means a half-underlug, versus the full-shroud, full underlug - not that it makes a lot of difference on a 3 inch revolver). However, not to worry, just the other day the Davidson's website still showed that they had quite a few in stock. (www.galleryofguns.com) They were on sale at pretty good prices. Have your dealer check them out, or find a dealer through the Davidson's web-site. Good luck. I have one and am very fond of it...blued, full lug model number GPF-331.

I'll probably get that too but I want a blue gun first. Damn!! Ruger's as bad as Beretta for discontinuing favorite models.

Do have your dealer check with Davidson's. I think they still have a number of the blued full-lug 3 inchers.

As of 8:30pm PST Jan 38 2005 Davidsons had 69 of them sitting in their warehouse.

You could always go with a current production S&W 4" Model 10 - they are nicely blued .38 Special +P rated and, most likely, in stock in, or easily available to, a dealer near you. This was the police 'rookie' revolver for eons... and still required by some security companies. Most folks will fire .38 Specials anyway, and those old 'FBI load' +P rated 158gr LHPSWC's and new Speer 135gr Gold Dots would be perfect in a 'house' gun. New, you should be able to buy one for ~$400 - equipped with the backstrap enclosing Uncle Mike's rounded rubber combat grips. Used, you can run the gammut - $125-$400. My 2" 10-11 was made 1/02 - and looks/shoots great. They are still fine revolvers with a trigger that breaks in to be far better than a tricked GP-100.

I do like the GP-100, of course...

Thank you, BluesBear

I'll be getting my Ruger from Gallery of Guns at Davidsons. Appreciate the link, my dealer told me he'll have it soon. :D Can't wait....

I spend more time with my Smiths than I do my Rugers, but the 3" GP's are excellent little guns indeed!

Do check the bluing closely, however, as the first one I received from Davidsons had a number of faint milky-colored splotches in the bluing. Didn't notice them until I had the gun a day or so. Admitttedly, you had to look pretty closely to see them, but once I did, they're all I saw. And I'm pretty picky about the condition of my guns. Fortunately, Davidsons replaced it immediately via their satisfaction guarantee (an immediate replacement policy, providing a replacement is available). I've used this guarantee twice before with a Puma .454 Trapper lever rifle and they're really great about it. Hopefully, you won't need to take advantage of their replacement policy, but make sure the gun is right before they sell out of their stock.

These little 3" GP's feel right between a 3" K-frame and an 3" L-frame... they're just a tad smaller than an L. The cylinder on an L frame is quite a bit stouter than the cylinder in the GP. With the little size GP grip, these are quite nimble and handy. I have a blue one and a stainless one and my favorite is the one I have in my hand at the moment.

I've heard that Ruger is planning to install internal locks in their DA revolvers in the future, so if you want a nice GP without an infernal lock... start thinking about buying one now.

The only source that I know of for the blue GP-331's is Davidsons and they'll be out of them at some point with no more in stock available. Dealer cost on the blue one was $280 when I bought mine a couple of months ago. I paid $25 shipping and $50 dealer mark-up over that. My stainless one came from Jerry's, dealer cost was about $375, if I recall correctly. RSR had some stainless ones at one point, but told me they were to discontinue carrying them (not sure if he meant the 3" or all Rugers).
