Original German Luger

I have an original german luger brought back from WWII by my great uncle. It has a little chip on the wood handles and the blueing is in pretty rough shape, you can still see the german swastik symble with the eagle holding it. I was wondering if I should get this gun a make over or try to just conserve it as it is?

In general you tend to diminish the value of any collectable gun (or anything else) by refinishing it. If the serial numbers of the asseblies match it is worth more than if they don't so if it were mine and they matched I would definately leave it as is. If they didn't match and I wanted a nice looking gun to shoot I would. It depends on if you want a nice looking shootable gun or want it to have value as a collectable gun.

Look to see if all the parts are matching. The serial will be on the front of the frame and on the barrel. The last two digits of the serial will be on most of the small parts aund usually the grips. If the pistol is all matching, do not restore it. If it is mismatched, then you will not lose much restoring it. If it has sentimental value a nice restoration job may be in order. Expect it to cost as much as the gun is worth though. Mismatched lugers make nice shooters if the barrel is good.

Oil it up and keep it like it is. Don't refinish or refurbish it. Too valuable like it is.
