My local shop just got a DWM Luger in .30 Luger for sale and I'm mighty tempted.

The gun is in excellent condition with matching numbers and one matching mag with wood base. The original finish in great shape with just a little holster wear. It comes with one box of very old ammo and a wooden display case.

Asking price is $695

I've wanted a Luger for years, should I jump on this before someone else does?

I'd get one for that price. Like you I've been looking but I've never found one that I could quite afford. Saw one that "spoke to me" in a shope the other day. Made in 1938 - looks like it had been reblued which I know knocks off some collector value but sure made for a beautiful gun. The grips were a bit loose but I figure that would probably be solveable with a screwdriver. They woudn't budge off the $899 asking price though.

I called the shop and asked them to hold it for me for a day while I make up my mind.

I'm pretty sure I want this gun but I don't want to pay too much and I'm not an expert on Lugers so I want to make sure that what I'm getting is worth the price before I spend that kind of money. I'm it's a good investment and will probably never go down in value unless I mess with it.

Just an update.

I went back to the shop and took another look at the gun, I'm almost 100% it's a 1920 Commercial model. I actually don't think the finish is original, it looks like it was probably refinished at some point in it's life. All the numbers match inside and out, the mag isn't numbered. The bore is excellent and there is no rust or pitting anywhere. The only thing I noticed was that one of the grip screws is not correct and will need to be replaced. The gun is marked with the commercial proof mark (N over crown) all over and is marked "Gesichert" on the side where the safety is.

I ended up putting some money down on it, I figured that it's probably worth the money and even if it's not collectors grade it should still make a great shooter.

That is a good price for a Luger in decent condition, even the common 1920 Commercial.
I trust you are prepared to handload for it. Winchester lists but seldom loads ammunition and I have read uncomplimentary things about the Fiocchi.
