Original US LF & CO 1917 knuckleknife

Hi, I have a original LF & Co 1917 ,WW1 knuckleknife. I want to sell it but it needs to be cleaned up, has some rust. I have been advised by a couple of antique dealers not to clean. I know there is some way I can clean this up without damaging it. They do. Can someone please give me some expert advise?? THNX!!

Can you provide a picture so we have an idea of where the rust is and how severe?

The first step is to soak the affected area in penetrating oil overnight and then try to clean it with an oily rag. Do this two or three times.

A soft brush can be used carefully to try to get more rust off during another soak.

Leave it at that because any more aggressive methods will render it valueless.

Is it new rust or old rust?


I would respectfully disagree with Hso, and not touch it with penetrating oil.

Mineral oil will prevent new rust without harming the old, valuable stuff.


EDIT: sometimes, old stuff like that has a distinctive scent, as well.

Penetrating oil can mask this scent.

seriously DONT CLEAN IT the value may acctualy decrease when you clean it

antique dealers and pawn shops will always tell you that your ruining the piece when you try and clean it up your best bet is to get a few estimits on its value right now
