I'm scanning over the New Mexico Hunting reg's and trying to decipher what Oryx hunt to put in for. Probably won't matter as I won't get drawn:rolleyes:
Anyone else putting in for Oryx, or hunted Oryx in NewMexico or else where??

Only applied once, got drawn. I recommend Rhodes Canyon, in the spring, as there is nothing else to hunt. The odds are virtually identical in each area to draw. Looked at the odds yesterday by area, and there isn't enough difference by area or season to matter. Be sure and not mix up your application so that you are applying for the military only tags (unless you qualify).

I think one of the best ways to go is to apply for a depredation permit if the state's still doing it - my understanding is they alot a certain number per each county in the state, and then draw for them. I don't believe this affects the "lifetime" hunt.

Anyway, it's been a while since I lived there (Eddy County), but it might be worth checking into.

Harve,

I drew the WSMR for trophy oryx on my very first try! And I shot a 39" bull with major mass.

I used a .30-06 with 165Gr TB bullets. My shot was at 180 or so yards.

Now get this pard my brother drew the main range as well on his FIRST try! What are the odds of that?

So to answer your question I've hunted oryx twice on the range once for me and once with my brother.

I'd be glad to answer any specific question you may have.

If you want to actually hunt, try an off range hunt. Most of the WSMR hunts require you to have an escort and help you pick your animal and shot. These animals see very little pressure and aren't too wild.

I just completed the online application. A fellow hunter has a WSMR security badge and recommended I put in for those and he would accompany me. So I picked 3 of those hunts.
I'll be using a Spencer carbine or a 1876 Winchester. It lowers the odds because I'll have to get within 100 yards, but that's fun to me.

Neither time that I hunted WSMR did we require an escort. We were given a map we were made to attend the briefing and we hunted on our own.

As far as not being to wild I'd have to argue with you there I spent hours and hours crawling on hands and knees both times trying to get a shot. Those Oryx know exactly how far rifle range is and they stay just clear of it.

They are very weary of any man on foot. They are however not scared of trucks in the least.

Wish I was still in state so I could afford a license. We were driving between Carizozo and San Antonio a few weeks ago, taking my son to Socorro, and saw one by the road. It was huge.

Harve yes I did and so did my brother. We both drew once in a lifetime hunts on the FIRST try.

Try and figure the odds on that one.

If my memory serves me right we both drew Stallion range tags.

No they are not native.

They were transplanted from the Kalahari into the White Sands Missile Range about 50 years ago.

The area of NM that they were transplanted into is very much like the Kalahari.

They also transplanted Kudu, Barbary sheep, Siberian and Persian Ibex. The only three that made it were the Persian ibex, the Oryx and the Barbary sheep.

I agree with Mr. H&Hunter. Hunted on WSMR. Rhodes Canyon. No escort. Short "briefing" in AM and you're on your own. These critters are definately wild! The area is fenced, but it is not a game fence that effects the Oryx at all. In fact, the only place I actually saw the fence, it was deteriorated to 1 strand. I also drew the first time. The drawing odds, just published, based on last year, range from about 4.5 to 7.5 depending on area/season of application, which is to say they are all about the same.

Certainly not very expensive. $5 to apply (may have gone up to $8), then pay for tag which as I recall is only about $1300.

memories of NM

I hunted both the the Oryx and the Barbary sheep around the Carlsbad area in 1993 as I was then based in Roswell for 2 years. It was a cheap deal in those days. Had no luck though but I was very new to hunting in those days.

Drew out my first time too!!!!

A friend and I applied on the same app. and drew out the first time we ever put in.. Stallion range in March 09... I'm going to use a 7mm Mag with 160gr. Barnes triple shok. Is that a good round and caliber for oryx?

I didn't draw the once in a life time hunts. But I did draw a population reduction hunt. You get put on a call list. If I get called I will be hunting with my old Spencer carbine 56-50and a 1876 Winchester 45-75 incase something goes awry with the Spencer.
Crackshot,
I'm sure your 7mm and those Barnes bullets will do. Study the Oryx anatomy. I've been told they are not built the same as North American game.

I've been told that their kill zone is through the shoulder. not behind it. My wifes cousins have all drown out for oryx and have always got one. They say they are a really tough animal.. Their advise is to take real high quality knives and plenty of them. Because of the oryx's tough hide.
