I'm looking for cleaning kit for my R700 VTR in 308 and I came across the Otis cleaning system on Amazon. I read up some reviews on this product and a lot of people seem to recommend it so now I'm trying to see which one I should purchase since they have several different options available. At first I was planning on finding a cleaning rod and bore guide but it seems like the Otis system eliminates the need for either (correct me if I'm wrong). I like the idea that its compact and convenient for carry so I can bring it to the range and break in my rifle without having to bring a long cleaning rod.

Theres an Otis sniper cleaning system which is cheaper than the Otis 308 rifle cleaning system and it comes with an additional brush, and lens cleaners :

Theres also an Otis all caliber rifle cleaning system as well : http://www.amazon.com/Otis-All-Cali...&ie=UTF8&qid=1396384245&sr=1-22&keywords=otis

Anyone have any experience with any of these? I have a boresnake for my AR 223 so this kit will mainly be for my 308, but it would be great if I could use this Otis kit for cleaning any other guns/calibers I decide to purchase in the future. Suggestions on any other brands of cleaning kits are welcome as well. Thanks for your input!

I use the Otis Deluxe Law Enforcement Cleaning System because it cleans all my rifles, shotguns, and pistols. It is a great system, you won't be disappointed whichever you pick. I haven't touched a cleaning rod since I got the Otis, and don't miss it.

I would get the cheapest one and still purchase the bore guide and a bore tech or dewey rod. The otis is nice to carry at the range but a good rod and bore guide is the only way to clean.

Shoot straight

You still need a rod, brushes and patches. Those are nice for your range bag, but you will still need to perform routine cleaning. It is best to use the correct tools for the job. A Dewey or a Rig rod is expensive, but it will last forever.

I heard with the otis cleaning kit or a bore snake, there is no need for a cleaning rod since it goes from the breech to the muzzle. Im sure there are benefits to having the dewey rod but for just the purposes of maintaining and cleaning the rifle, can I get away with just the Otis sniper cleaning kit?

You can get away with the Otis system, but for me, it is more work. Yes, it goes from breach to muzzle, it it great for a quick pass or two in camp after you have gotten your gun wet, at the range to get heavy fouling out, or for a quick wipe down of a semi auto, revolver, or lever gun where major field stripping is required to get a rod through the breech. Similar to the bore snake - some folks swear by them. I have one & use it occasionally for those types of things.

I am, however, pretty anal about getting my bores clean. After the initial few one way passes to get heavy powder & carbon out of the bore, I like to short stroke & scrub a bit with wet & dry patches, follow with bronze or nylon brushes, then wet/ dry again until my patches come out pretty clean. With the Otis cable pulling one stroke, one 1 way pass at a time, this becomes an all day job. It is quicker & easier as well as more thorough for me to clean with a good rod & a bore guide.

I have an Otis and it mainly stays in the truck box during hunting season. It's still not a rod and for a quick n dirty wipe through it's not as fast as a boresnake.

However, it DOES do a great job on cleaning a Remington 760 pump gun.

I keep one in my pack for emergency cleaning when way back in the boonies. In that role it works great. I have better stuff for a proper cleaning at home.

No, there is no need for a rod when you have the Otis kit. They do come in handy as a back scratcher. At least that is why I keep mine around.
