A buddy of mine was shooting Czech surplus 7.62x54R through his 91/30 today when one went off prematurely. It looked as if the round was about a third of the way into the chamber when it went off. The casing was peeled back like a jagged banana peel with the back of the round intact. Oddly enough, there was not a mark on the primer. Apparently he was being somewhat forceful with the bolt when he chambered the cartridges so I think it was a combination of an old overly sensitive primer and a cartridge being shoved a little harder than it liked. I don't think the rifle was at fault.

His hand had a number of lacerations and a lot of blood on it, but didn't really look all that bad. It was starting to swell up pretty badly however and we thought he should go to the ER since it was likely that he might have some metal embedded in his hand. I guess it's a good thing he was wearing glasses.

Just something to think about. I know there are a lot of people here like me who like to get out and shoot these old mil-surps with whatever surplus ammo we can get for cheap and Mosin Nagants have a reputation for being rifles that are meant to be cycled vigorously. Next time you go to chamber a round in one however, don't just cram it on in there.

Glad he wasn't hurt any worse. Only time I have heard of an out of battery on a mosin, someone tried to cram a round in a chamber that already had on in it.

Thank God he's OK. If you can get pictures of rifle, post them please.

I'll try to find out exactly what kind of ammo he was using. It appeared to be steel cased Czech, (800 round can with the rings that you pull on to peel off the top inside of a wooden crate). It looked like it was copperwashed and had plain tips.

It might take a couple days, but if I can I'll get a photo of the shell casing. We found the bullet about halfway down the bore, (apparently there wasn't enough pressure to push it all the way down after the casing failed), and the bolt will no longer close in the rifle although there is no readily visible damage to the action.

I haven't heard from my buddy yet, so I figure he's either still at the hospital or he's at home asleep with whatever painkillers they gave him.

I heard from my friend. He's still at the hospital and has a piece of shrapnel lodged in his wrist that they intend on removing tomorrow. Otherwise he's OK.

"a piece of shrapnel in the wrist" "otherwise ok"?

If they gotta do surgery...theres no "ok" to it ;)

    Glad to hear he's ok,

It sounds like a scary situation I certainly would have been a bit shaken up after something like that, hopefully he'll still feel comfortable behind a gun after this.

Good luck to your friend I wish him the best.

Herm, I am going to go fire my new 91/30 with some Albanian surplus tomorrow and now I'm a little iffy.

I will still go, but will be watching closely.

shrapnel in the wrist is better than shrapnel to the eyes/face/ head/ heart/ lungs/throat/carotid artery/ femoral artery/ male sensitive areas.
any crash you can walk way from is a good one

glad to hear everyones still got eyes and fingers

The ammo in question here definitely wasn't Albanian, so you should be alright. I actually just used up the last of a 440 round can of Albanian and never had any problems with it. I might have a chance to see my friend tomorrow, and if I do I'll try to get some pictures of the cartridge in question, the case of ammunition and the rifle.

Wow. I'm having trouble seeing how you could do this unless the firing pin was sticking out.

Maybe you should check your firing pin protrusion with that little tool that should have come with your rifle.

That sounds like the warning on kinetic bullet pullers. I wonder if that has ever happened? Thats a scary thought. Glad your friends ok.
