I was trying to explain to my 6 year old, why Daddy probably couldn't get his gun out of the pawn shop today, because .gov background checkers don't work weekends, and they have to do a background check on me.

Federal background checks are running on the weekends. I don't know about at your state level, what's needed and how it's done, but if all you're worried about is the white form (4473?) you're good to go on a weekend.
