I had to buy a new cleaning kit, the old one was so old that I couldn't find new brushes that fit the threads.

The new kit is a simple Outer's universal kit. It came with a bottle of Tri-Care solution. It's supposed to clean, lube, and protect all in one.

I was cleaning my weapons from shooting last Sunday, (I know, I usually clean them as soon as I get home from the range, but I also drove about 600 miles in the span of less than 48 hours and I was tired), I cleaned my .22 with the Outer's Tri-Care, and then decided to run some Hoppe's number 9 solution through it and see if there was a difference.

I won't use the Tri-Care again! The amount of crude left behind was amazing. The Tri-Care didn't seem to get any of the lead out of the barrel.

I will only use the old stand-bys from now on. I guess that's what I get for hoping that this trend to get everything in one product so you can be lazy and skip a step or two might have actually generated something worth using.

Mmmm, maybe...

I'm not familiar with the Tri-Care stuff, but might it be possible that it got UNDER the lead (with a little time), permitting your follow-on treatment to then remove it?

Could be, but not sure.

I'll just stick with how I learned to clean and oil firearms years ago and not try and be lazy and skip steps. Solvent and brush first, followed by solvent and a patch until the patch is clean, then lightly oiled patch followed by a couple of dry patches to remove any excess oil.

Been doing it that way for years, the all-in-one stuff is not something I expect to continue using.

outers is a pretty good product for me so far. it does take a while to work, ie, alot of patches on jags to get it to get the crud out. but all the patches in that package of rod patch and jag and tri care will clean a leaded up barrel just fine.
and that barrel hadnt been cleaned in im guessing at least a decade.

My barrels definitely get cleaned more than once a decade, cleaing my weapons is about the only thing I'm OCD about.

the thing is, if it takes so darn long to do it right with the Outer's I may as well use Hoppe's number 9 and then oil the gun afterward.

I'll keep the Outer's Tri-Care in the range box for quick cleaning at the range, but I think I'll stick with the old fashioned way once I get home.

Besides, I can lock myself in a room with nothing but me and my guns and tell every one else to leave me alone until I'm done: if it takes longer that just means I need to brew more coffee.:D
