Any suggestions on a good over and under for dove, quail, skeet, etc.? I'm looking for something under $600 that can be a reliable work horse while light enough that my wife could use it as well.

Thanks

$600 doesn't buy much in the o/u department. You basically have the Stoeger condor, and the Mossberg Silver Reserve. The Stoegers handle awful, and the stocks look like they were carved from discarded 2x4s, but they have a decent reputation for durability. The MSR's are decent looking, and handle like a more expensive gun, but aren't going to hold up to a lot of high volume shooting. If you buy a used one, make sure the serial number is above the cutoff for the firing pin update.
For what it's worth, you can buy a pretty nice semi-auto for the same money.

I forgot about the Baikal, heavy and stiff to operate, but one heck of a tough shotgun in the $500-$550 range.

except for the Lanber from CDNN, the answer is NO. and what does light enough for the wife have to do with anything? Are you implying your wife can't handle something because YOU think she is not capable - as I watch women in their 70's shoot 9# shotguns?

BTW, SKEET is NOT pasture clays, but a game unto itself

I suggest that you'll do better with a used better-quality gun rather than a new one if that's your budget limit. I have owned 3 SKBs in 12 and 20 that were bought used but in excellent shape for around $600. New ones like them will be something over $1000. I still have a couple of SKBs and really like them.

rule 303, wgp, and petrey10, thanks for the input. I know the better O&U's are 1000+ and works of art alongside being a firearm. Being unfamiliar with the availability and price I had hoped a cheaper "work horse" would be available for under 600.
Let me rephrase the question and ask, what O&U would you recommend as a work horse hunt and play shotgun within a reasonable price range. (under 1200)

oneonceload, it never fails when I post a question on this forum that someone is more concerned about insulting the other person's ignorance and praising their own knowledge than actually having a productive conversation. If I say I need something light enough for my wife it means I would like to have something light enough for my wife. My wife and I shoot enough together that I know what she can HANDLE and what she would PREFER. So in the future, maybe you should consider how your response might come across and stick to helpful information.

Well, you asked for opinions. I do not like ANY O/U, but that's just me. You don't even get to the good over and unders in that price range. I hate to see anyone spend money less than wisely. Save your money until you can get a Beretta or a Browning. Look at used ones, too.

My two cents is to save your money and spend a bit more. You'll get a better gun that you will be far more satisfied with. My favorite O/U is a Browning Superposed Lightning grade that I bought in 1980 for $1000. It is just plain beautiful and shoots like a dream.

I've had a Lanber for almost 30 years now and never had a problem with it. Was a good gun for the money even back then.

"You don't even get to the good over and unders in that price range."

I disagree. While it is used, you can get a Savage 333 (not 330) made by Valmet that is rock-solid, smooth, and trouble-free. It'll set you back between $500-$600.

I've seen used Valmet 412's for around $600, and they are a better gun than any of the cheap guns mentioned here...

O/Us take more labor than any other gun except SxS to be assembled correctly and properly. With a $1200 budget you get into the realms of Browning, Beretta, SKB and others that are slightly used and will last a long time

As to the other comment - we see it here and elsewhere several times a week where someone assumes their petite wife isn't capable of handling a heavy gun or a 12 or similar, when I know that women who are petite and older can and do handle such gun - very successfully - and the heavier gun helps mitigate the recoil much better than a light one. If your wife is a proficient shooter, good for you - keep her shooting

With your expanded budget I think there are lots of possibilities.

Again, consider used. It's not that your are looking for a "work of art", it's just that guns that started out in the higher prices are likely lighter, the stocks may be a bit slimmer in your hands and the metal work of higher quality. My SKBs at $600 to $700 have been great. They are quality guns, pretty but not so pretty you are afraid of a scratch, light and easy to handle. My last one was brand new at $1050, a 20 ga with 3 inch chambers and interchangeable choke tubes. I have a Winchester 101 O/U I bought used last year for $900 (retail from a dealer at a show), now my favorite O/U. Very nice gun, 3inch, tubes, should last you for years. You ought to be able to find Ruger Red Labels in 20 or 12, used but very good, in that budget (personally I think the Red Label 12 is too heavy but the 20 is nice).

CZ has an O/U for around $800. I don't know about the quality - you'd have to do some research on that yourself - but they are pretty light.

If you are concerned about weight, an O/U might not be the best choice, at least not in 12 gauge.

I've actually been looking at some of the CZs. Does anyone on here have any experience with them?

I found what you are looking for. look at this link. It is used but appears to be in good condition. I have no attached interest to it. The gun was on the local gun listing.

If you can't log on..then this is what is says...
description: Beretta Silver Snipe 12ga. o/u, monobloc, single trigger, 26" barrel, top barrel-full choke, bottom barrel-modified choke. 525.00 615-809-6530

Maybe this is what you are looking for?

I have a Mossberg SR that I just bought. haven't shot it yet. This is the first gun that I did not do the reviews on. Its a 2011. I may be sorry.

I have the Baikal MP310. Russian, about $400-500 depending on what model you get. It is a very stiff gun right out of the box, but read the tricks online and it smooths out real good. I have over 1,000 rounds through mine since August, and not even the slightest hit of something going wrong. Plus, if you buy it from gallery of guns online, it comes with their lifetime warranty.

I have a Baikal also and it's been reliable (3,000+ rounds over 6 years). I use it for busting clays, duck and pheasant hunting. It's not the artwork a Browning or Beretta is but it's reliable, accurate, and built like a T-72.
