Hi all
I know someone who bought a handgun 9mm from a family member
about 13 or 14 years ago. the family member nor the person owning
it never got a license or permit for this handgun. neither one has ever
had a permit or license. the handgun is kept secure and never taken
out or carried. is this against the law ? does this person need to get
the gun registered ? or can it just stay where it is? state of indiana.
thank you for any information.

Does Indiana have those FOID cards? There is at least one member here from that state who would know.

Do you have to put the gun information on the FOID card?

If you are asking about carrying it, then you need to get a License to Carry a Handgun or a Lifetime License.

If you are asking about merely owning it, then be aware that there is no "license to own" or registration in the state of Indiana.

No, it is not against the law. 13 or 14 years ago all private sales of handguns had to go through a dealer in Indiana. This law proved feckless and unenforceable. The law was abolished in 1998.

There is no registration requirement in Indiana. Some cities, including my own, had or still have optional registration for collectors. However, no one need comply.

No, you may be thinking of Illinois.

1) Clean it.
2) Get some ammunition for it.
3) Take it to the range and shoot it.
4) Practice using your shift key in your spare time.

Yes, do what StandingWolf said BUT before that - learn gun safety. ;)
