I recently purchased a Pietta 1858 Remington New Model Army Target. I have experience shooting and hunting with in-line muzzleloaders but this is my first venture into black powder handguns. I ordered a package of Ox-Yoke Wonder Wads that are supposed to be pre-lubed to go between the powder and ball. When they arrived, I noticed that while they are yellowish in appearance and smell like they're lubed, they feel pretty dry. There doesn't seem to be any residue on them. It makes sense that I wouldn't want excess lube contaminating my powder charge, but is this how the Wonder Wads typically appear, or did I get a bag that is dried out? Maybe it is some type of "dry" lube? Thanks for any input.

The lubricant is more like paraffin than grease. It's waxy and works pretty well. The nice thing is, they do the same thing as a grease ring around the ball. If they fit right-n-tight they'll prevent a chain-fire.

They feel dry or waxy but not moist and they do the job. I make my own using the Gato Feo formula. They are cheaper once you have the materials and punch and in my opinion work better. And being able to make my own means I'm not dependent on what is in stock at the store.
