+P in P220?

Do you guys see any reason why I can't fire a reasonable amount of Hornady 230gr TAP CQ +P ammo through my 1985 Sig P220? Just enough to get comfortable with it, then use as SD round. I'm probably talking less than 100 rounds.

If you plan on using +p ammo for SD, you can't just try 100rds in the beginning and stop using it afterwards, it's pointless. You need to regularly train with the SD load of your choice, at least monthly if you are serious about SD.

Think of training this way, if you go to the gym and bench 250lbs but then completely stop, will you still be able to do this at any time in the future in case of emergency? If you train, you need to keep it up. Pistolcraft is a martial art.

While I've shot Sigs for many years, and they do handle +P quite well in my opinion, I seem to recall that they do not recommend extended use of +P ammo on the regular P series guns.

As the previous poster suggested you need to train with what you will carry for SD. I still think +p will be o.k. using about 50 to 100 rounds per month, but I wouldn't go over that much with +P

If your 1985 SIG-SAUER .45 caliber P220 has a "green colored" recoil spring,
its my understanding that these weapons are rated for use with +P ammo.

Mix up a couple "dutch loads" of alternating +P and your practice ammo in the mag, if the bullet groups on the target don't seperate to different POI at your maximum distance, generally 7 yards, (maybe 15 max for self defense -- otherwise the BG better have shot and missed or you will have a heck of a time with the Grand Jury!) You are IMHO good to go for practice with the cheap stuff. If not, I'd rethink using +P, as bullet placement counts for more than any other factor in handgun effectiveness.

You have to shoot quite a bit of +P ammo to wear out your P220.
With the price of .45 carry ammo, you'd probably go broke first!

That little bit won't hurt anything. I would actually be more concerned about cycle reliability. Later P220s (identified by a rounded hammer tip and a braided-wire-construction, green-painted recoil spring) are fully rated for +P.

I regularly use Cor-Bon +P 185's in my P220. They work just fine for me.

Stephen A. Camp has something regarding P220 and ammunition on Hipowers and handguns. Go read.

I've heard of folks running .45 Super in them, too. Just check the springs, as previously stated.

Just a quick update. I went to the range and tried out the +P. By the way, the ammo is Hornady Law Enforcement 230 gr TAP CQ +P. MV according to the box is 950 fps.

I'm shooting these in a late 80's Sig P220. They shot perfectly. No jams, no ftf's etc. At 50 feet they were about 6" low, but they grouped well (10 shots, 6 inches, freehand).

I think I'll use them as SD ammo for this gun. I'll shoot another 50 or so just to be sure.

i see no reason why not it is always a good idea to test fire any rds that you want to use for hd/sd,ccw etc.

note to veryone that shall read in reference to using +p and +p+ ammo first refer to the owners manual and that should tell you everything that you need to know.
