P14 303 find

Hi

I just found this P14 on gunbroker (Item=233734384) and it strikes me that the stock has no sign of the front volley sight and has finger groves instead.

Does anybody have any inf about that change in manufacturing? Or is this a later modification?

Not all of them have them what with rearsenaling and refitting and general refurbishing for rifles in a governments armory.

Stocks get replaced and designs change. Old sighting systems get discarded in favor of what someone else feels is better or more simplistic.

Nice rifle. I see they don't give them away any longer. I beleive the volley sights were deleted later in the production run....chris3

I have one that is as you describe, I'm unsure if the P14 had volley sights. The production run was very short and it was never a general issue arm, home guard and defense industry security in Britain. The general opinion is that with only a five round magazine it was inferior for front line use. Mine is very accurate with Issue ammunition and with my hand loads. Many of the P14's were sporterized into magnums, as the action was long and the bolt face required only minor alteration.
Curious: what was the asking price on GB?

Without the volly sights would be a Weiden (sp) Factory conversion. Kind of like an FTR, the rifles were rebuilt and the volly sights were removed. My Remington Pattern 14 (#3mk1*) has been "Weidenized" and has a "pot belly" stock which was not normal for a Pattern 14. So, the removal of the volly sights would be an arsenal retrofit and totally normal.

There have been more than a few P14s restocked with M17 stocks, these have no volley sights & longer finger grooves. I recall reading somehting about this in years gone by but not sure if it was an armory thing or individual but it apparently is a simple screw on fit ie as per the original.
