Hi everyone, just bought a P22 for cheap range practice. After dealing with the nightmare that is assembly after cleaning I decided to load the magazine. I can't seem to get the cartridges to line up perfectly. They stack up a little crooked. Is this a problem? I'm not very experienced with handguns so maybe I'm missing some sort of loading trick. Thanks!

Nope, that's perfectly normal. The .22lr is a rimmed cartridge, and rimmed cartridges are known for not always stacking in a mag perfectly. It shouldn't cause any issues with the gun's function.

What part of the assembly process did you have trouble with? It is a bit tricky at first, but the actual process is dead simple once you get through it a few times. I rather liked my P22. Not a tack-driver, but definitely a fun little plinker, and a perfect host for a can, if you're into that sort of thing. :)

I'm glad to hear that. Thanks! The hard part was trying to put it back together was of course the spring. I blame myself for that one though. Do you have any ammo in particular that you like to use?

Yeah, the spring is pretty stiff. The first time I disassembled mine I had such a hard time getting the slide back on that I almost gave up and brought it to the 'smith at the shop I bought it at. Figured it out at the last minute though, and it went easy from then on.

As far as ammo, I always just used whatever bulk pack Wal-Mart had on hand. Some people swear by the high-velocity stuff, and that's fine, but I never had a specific need for it.

I had to get rid of my P22 awhile back to help pay bills, but I sometimes wish I had held onto it - though I wish I had held onto my MK III more!

Prorock,

if you PM me your email I'll make you a quick video tomorrow on the easiest way I've found to put the P22 back together. Once you do it a couple times, your hands remember & you don't really think about it. I invented a stealhead/salmon fly that a sell online. I can sit & watch tv & tie flies without hardly ever looking at them because my hands "Remember". I know that sounds crazy but it's the only way I can explain it.

As for ammo some guns are "Picky". What I did with mine is I bought a lot of different brand 50rd boxes & shot them until I found whatshe liked then bought a lot of that. What my P22 likes (Federal 525 bulk Copper coated 36gr HP's) yours may not & it's a good excuse to spend a day at the range "Experimenting"

You'll get much better at reassembly the more you do it, the non captive spring system certainly makes things interesting....but you'll get used to it.

Well I should be taking it out to the range on Monday. Does anyone think a P22 needs a break in period? Is there anything I should be doing those first 200-300 rounds? It has already been cleaned. If any other P22 owners have any tips please let me know. Thanks again

I never did anything special with mine, just find an ammo it likes and stick with it. Lots of people bash the P22 but I've never had any issues.

Blazer works good in mine. You should have got with your gun ad little "rod" that slips into the spring thru the hole on the slide and makes it easy to assemble. Check your manual, it explains that.

Well I had a chance to put 60 rounds through it this afternoon. 40 CCI Mini Mags and 20 Winchester Super X HPs. The P22 ran like a dream. What a fun gun! Thanks to everyone for your advice.

The reassembly plastic black rod that fits inside the spring works good and keeps the spring straight. Break in for mine consisted of cleaning and a few squirts of breakfree CLP. Have used the Walmart 550 rounds bulk box and CCI mini mags. Have about 1000 rounds through mine with very few problems FTF FTE. Not that accurate out past 20' for me but a nice lite easy to care for little pistol.

I can't get bulk ammo to run well in mine, but I sure agree with everything else you said. Still provides a lot of cheap fun.

Czguy,

break out the dremel, a polishing wheel & some polishing compound(I used Mothers). Polish the heck out of the feeding ramp. I had the same problem but after I polished the ramp, it eats anything.

Hummm good idea on the polishing of the ramp. I wonder if because I use CLP which has Teflon it has stopped any problems with feeding?? Just wondering?

I don't know? I've never used CLP. I read it in the P22 bible & it worked.

I've had the Walther for a year now, and when it was new I did step by step everything in the P22 bible. Not all P22s are created equal, but I'm happy with mine. We use it primarily in our back yard for casual plinking.

Just got finished putting 370 through it this afternoon. It even shot 80 rounds of Remington Golden Bullet. I have to say I'm impressed and I wish I would have picked one up sooner.

Yep they are cheap fun little guns...Welcome aboard the P22 express.

Yep. The P22s are great little guns. I put about 700 rounds of CCI minimags through mine before switching to less expensive Remington Thunderbolts. The only issues I've ever had with jamming were due to a box of minimags being heavily waxed, and I didn't notice before they were loaded.

I haven't felt the need to do any of the improvements in the P22 bible, but mine is relatively new, so perhaps some of the issues the bible addresses were taken care of by Walther in later production runs.
