P22 owners,

I am having a bit of a hard time getting the 5" barrel clean on my P22. I was hoping my standard pistol cleaning tools (for 9mm + .38) would be up for the task, assuming I bought a proper brush to fit the P22's barrel.

Oops.

It seems I will need a dedicated device to do this. There is quite the build up of gunk on the barrel

What do other P22 owners use and suggest? Links would be esp helpful.

Thanks!
Phil

what are you shooting that's accumulating crap in the barrel? i've been cleaning my p22 (not the 5", admittedly) every two bricks, all of which have been remington except for one of winchester (and the first 134 or so rounds through the gun were minmags), and all i've seen has been debris from the last shot, and a light ring in the chamber, which comes out quickly with a brush.

do have to be careful with the shallow rifling in that tiny barrel...

I'm careful to use coated bullets...no lead. As the other posters have mentioned, I like using a boresnake also, followed by CLP. I've put a couple of thousand rounds thru it without problems with the barrel.

The problems I've had is that this pistol is very ammo sensitive, and I had to do a bit of smoothing of internal parts to keep the aluminum slide from getting gouged.

hmmmm...

now that you mention it, I DID get a brick of uncoated ammo a while back. I pushed thru some lead shavings as I was cleaning it too. I'll have to stick to the coated kind I guess. Thanks for the suggestion.

And yes I did buy a boresnake.

a trick i've learned with boresnakes is that if you twist the snake while its in the bore, it will clean far better than just pulling it straight through. you want to get it to bunch up real tight and fill in all the areas of the bore it normally doesnt make enough contact with to fulfill its purpose.
