P6 Grips Turned White?

Last night after the kids went to bed I cleaned my P6. I hit it with some Break Free, cleaned it and lubed it. This morning I have found that the left grip panel is now almost entirely white. I removed the panel and scrubbed it with a brush in hot water and it did nothing.

Anyone have any idea why this happened and what I can do to fix it?

Did you use gun scrubber or brake cleaner? That will usually do it to plastic.

I don't think Break Free CLP is the same as Birchwood Casey's gun scrubber. Which did you use? Gun scrubber which is basically brake cleaner will do that to plastic. Unfortunately I don't think you can do anything except replace the grips.

I used gun scrubber (break free).

Check if the gun scrubber says safe for polymer/plastic on the can. It sounds like the scrubber is damaging the plastic.

Try rubbing gun oil into them with a toothbrush.

Often, that will restore the Black back!

All your Gun-Scrubber & hot water scrubbing have completely removed the surface oil from them and left them dry & white.

There is a automotive product made by Mothers called Back To Black that I have used on automotive items with good results.

Gun Scrubber turned my grips white. Then I went to the car parts store and got a bottle of Quick Scratch Out, The grips are black now.

The same thing happened to me. Now you have an excuse to replace the grips with Nill wood grips or Pachmayer grips (if you can find them).

I didn't turn mine white, but i did Duracoat them black and they turned out great!
I have also seen others use Krylon Fusion with mixed results.

Try wiping it down with a silicone treated cloth, it works on the white spots left behind on mine.

That's what I was trying to tell him in post #6.

Gun Oil, Silicone cloth, Bacon Grease, it don't matter as long as it adds lube back to the very throughly de-greased plastic.

I suggested gun oil & a toothbrush to get it down in the bottom of the checkering.

Ya, try what rcmodel said and don't use strong chemicals on plastic anymore.

Try a hairdryer or a heat gun. Be careful not to melt the plastic. Color should be restored before the plastic reaches the melting point.

I've also used this product on my car on that pebbled gray trim that's so common. It does restore the dark color, but the stuff has the consistency and texture of thick Armor All. It is greasy stuff, I would avoid using it on anything you regularly touch (i.e., gun grips).

Regular (non synthetic safe) Birchwood Casey Gunscrubber and Breakfree Powderblast are potentially hazardous to plastic grip panels and other synthetics. As rcmodel noted they pull the oils out of plastics and dry them.

Birchwood Casey makes a version of gunscrubber safe for synthetics. Walmart sells it here.

Yeah, I've used it on my poymer framed guns, but it dries up way to fast to be much use for cleaning. I ended up just getting drugstore alcohol with the lowest water content possible. Works just as good, dries fast but not too fast, and doesn't stink up the house as bad.

Also be careful about getting the Mother's stuff on your face. I use it on the plastic of my Chevy Avalanche and wiped the sweat off my forehead and I broke out so bad it wasn't funny.
