Well, here we go.....again......
I am contemplating between the two, P95 or XD9. I have easy access to both as the shops around here stock both. Both of these pistols feel comfortable to me and whichever one will be my first semi-auto so ease of use and reliability are important. I intend to use it primarily as a range gun but will complement my revolver as a hd weapon (non-ccw state).

Your thoughts.........?

Thanks a million!!

It's just my personal opinion but I think the XD has it beat in most catagories.

Ease of use: I don't know how you get much easier than an XD? Rack slide, grip it, aim and pull.

Weight: 25oz for the XD, 27oz for the P95.

Length: 7" XD, 71/4" P95

Reliabiltiy: Both are very good.

Trigger: XD

You can get the XD in about any configuration you want from the factory with the exception of stainless slide and night sights, unless they have changed that?

Don't get me wrong, the P95 is a fine pistol, many swear by them. I just think the XD is a step ahead of it in many ways.

OH yea, welcome to The High Road. ;)

P95

I have had a P95 for about a year now and just plain love it. The thing will shoot any brand of ammo without even a hiccup. I have not have a single Failure of any kind with this pistol and have put around 4/5000 rounds through it. It sure ani't the prettiest gun out there but I would put it up against damn near any other pistol as far as reliability. And by the way you won't have to sell your first born to get it either...

I can't really fault my ol' P95 - and so can say that fugliness aside - it is a very good value gun and A1 reliable. Did me carry for quite some while a ways back.

OTOH if I was buying and choosing - tho I have no XD-9 - I would be giving that serious consideration. I only wish I had had a chance to shoot one and so really compare.

Both are fine weapons, and I would be happy to own either. The XD has the Ruger beat for "cool" factor, but the Ruger is usually about $100 cheaper than the Springfield. And don't let talk of bad P95 triggers get to you--the trigger on my buddy's P95 is quite a bit better than the trigger on my more expensive CZ75B, and also better than the trigger on some Sigs costing twice what the Ruger costs.

On the other hand, the XD9 is also a great value, even though it costs more than the Ruger.

You've got two great choices. One has a traditional double/single action with an exposed hammer, while the other has a unique cocking system sort of like a hybrid between a Glock and a traditional double/single action.

You need to go rent one of each and compare them, see which one works for you and fits your hand best.

This is actually the first this or that thread that caused me to implode with indecision (and I am decisive and opinionated). Both are well made, reliable to a fault (in my experience), combat accurate, and good values.

I haven't had any finish issues with my 2 XD's..but have heard of others that have so would recommend a stainless upper on the XD.

XD uses passive safeties with all trigger pulls from first to last being the same.

P95 uses active safeties (most of them..there is decock only and DAO models as well) and on most the first trigger pull with hammer down is double action which is harder (more pounds) than subsequent shots which are single action.

That is as far as I can go without getting indecisive. I do plan on buying the newer version of the P95 when it comes out in the next month or so.

Good luck.

Thank for the info everyone. I went to the shop yesterday and handled both of them again. The XD won me over. I bought it (the bi-tone model) and will pick it up Saturday with hopes of hopping on the range for a while. I guess I'm feeling a bit guilty not buying the Ruger since that is what I've purchased previously and am very happy with.

I know what your all thinking................GET OVER IT!
Something tells me I will as soon as I start firing that XD!

Good choice...you won't regret it.

Did you see the latest edition of Handguns Magazine? They did an extensive torture test of the XD-9 and it came through with flying colors. Most of us will never do these things to a pistol and I know of several more expensive guns that wold not make it in this test. This test ought to put to bed any questions one might have as to how durable the XD is compared to a Glock or anything else for that matter.

I have an XD-40 and love it. Absolutely reliable and accurate and no problems out of the 1000+ rounds i have through it. I'd buy another XD, if they made it in 45ACP, but since they cheezed out and made the 45 GAP, thats not going to happen.

Enjoy it...great guns...these are highly underrated!

XD is the better design unless you want something made in the USA which the SA XD is commonly mistaken as. its made in croatia unless SA snuck the tooling in or setup shop in USA recently.

P95 has more parts to break and way ruger is going they will get even more to break.

Trigger: XD

TOTALLY disagree with that. Having owned a P95 for over a year, and having rented an xd (since that is what i really wanted) I can tell you in a completely unbiased way that the P95 trigger (ok....at least MY P95) is WAY better than the XD. Mine is a stock trigger.

I like both guns, but I think Ruger (politics aside) has a better value for the money.

Just an opinion based on personal experiences of course

I have 1370 rounds through my P95 with no malfs at all. I rented an XD twice and both had either ftf's or fte's both times. Of course we all know rental guns aren't maintained as well as we would maintain our own firearms........so your mileage may vary.

I wish you could've shot both before you decided. I think either of them is a fine firearm.

I used to have the ruger, never fit my hand just right. It never malfunctioned, no faults with it, I just never loved it.
Then I got the XD9 sub compact, and love is in the air. 2000+ rounds without fail, eats anything, just a dream. Loved it so much I got the service model as a nightstand gun, same good trigger, same no fail, same SO good in my hand, a natural pointer.... I could go on and on.
No finish issues with mine. Good Luck!

I own one of each

I own a Ruger P95 Decock only and an XD-9. Both are fine pistols. The Ruger sights are more difficult for my eyes (bifoculs). The Ruger is more consistantly accurate. Eats any ammo I feed it. I have had several dealings with the factory and all was good. I messed up the slide , sent it to Ruger and they refinished it for a very fair price. When I first got the XD-9 The slide release lever scratched the slide every time I field stripped it. I sent the pistol to Springfield for repair and they did it as a warranty repair. They left the scratches in the slide and refinished over them. Both guns are reliable and well built. The Ruger will shoot better for any one if the rubber sleeve from Mike's or Hogue is installed.

My choice in a 9mm was the CZ-75B and the FN FNP-9.

I'd take the FNP over either of the choices when considering plastic guns and the CZ over both when dressing in steel.
