I am considering purchasing a Walther P99 in the next few months and am wondering if they are a well made gun. I know it's a poly and that some of ya'll are in love with steel, but as far as the polys go, is it good?

It would be for home defense, target practice, and possibly as a CCW.

But of course upon reflection, a shotgun with 00 buckshot would be the preferred choice for home defense. But I digress.

I have a Walther P99 in 40 auto. It's my favorite cold weather carry gun. (I carry a Kahr K9 in the summer.) It's lightweight, accurate enough for two legged varmint work, points naturally, and is easy to shoot with hot 40 cal loads. I like carrying it better than my SIG 229 (although I think the SIG is an overall better pistol, it isn't as comfortable when carrying concealed).

I have only two problems with the Walther. The DA trigger is a little rough for slow fire accuracy (which isn't that big of a problem because that's not what I bought it for) and that little hump at the bottom of the trigger guard (I don't know what it's for) wears on my trigger finger after a few hundred rounds.

Other than those minor problems, an overall great pistol. I'm very happy with mine. By the way, I bought it from Joe Galbois of Marshfield Arms through Gun Broker for $530 shipped to my FFL. He's a great guy to do business with.

smith and wesson sw99 is same thing and can be had for little less money
also availible in .45acp and 9mm.

has the same three action trigger system with decocker.

By most reports, fit and finish is better on the German guns

If you want a Glock with the action of a SIG

Thanks for the replys.

Something I haven't gotten a reply from Walther America on yet is wether or not tritium sights are available in the US. WA doesn't have them listed on their website as an accessory, but the German Walther site does. Anybody have tritium sights for the P99?

you can get Meps or Trijicons and put them in yourself. i prefer the Meps and all my pistols wear them. the only tool that you will need is a nut driver to put the front sight on. the one for a Glock works.

from the Walther Forum:

"Push the rear sight detent down with a punch, then simply slide the rear sight to the left and off of the dovetail. Without the detent pushing up against the rear sight screw, the sight will come off easily. Then, carefully and slowly let the detent up. It's spring-loaded, so if you let it go suddenly, you'll put the detent and its spring into orbit, never to be found again. The screw in the rear sight is reverse-threaded. You turn it clockwise to remove it. When installing the Meprolights, first put the rear sight in the dovetail to make sure it fits. If not, first try removing some metal from its base with a fine file. Once it fits, put the original rear sight screw into the Meprolight sight, turning counter-clockwise, until it is almost flush with the right side of the slide. Put the rear sight into the dovetail, from the left side, about 3/4 of the way to the left. Make sure that a flat side of the rear sight screw is parallel to the ground, because the spring-loaded detent will catch this. Push in the spring-loaded detent with a punch, and move the rear sight further to the right so that the rear sight screw is aligned with the notch in the detent. Let the detent up slowly. "

I shot one a few months ago. I only put a few rounds through one, but was impressed w/ the trigger & how well it shot.

Three words. Get. It. Now!

If you like 9mm or .40SW, depending on which you get, you will NOT regret it.

It came promising a lot but HK and Glock has kept it at bay even when its prices were lowered. I think part of its lack of appeal is learning 3 triggers in the standard setup and the lack of aftermarket parts for it. There is no denying that we like to 'personalise' our weapon and the P99 has few options for that.

Be careful about adjusting the rear sight- not too much muscle. Take a small flat head screwdriver and mill off the edges so it fits inside the slot of the sight screw. This way you pretty much avoid the rear sight plunger. The rear sight comes out really easy, almost too easy.

When reinstalling, do that carefully, too. Make sure the sight screw fits in the notch of the plunger, which is placed parallel to the slide.

P99 40S&W

:) I've had my 40 for over two years. The trigger is very easy to learn. If we refused to try something new, we would still be shooting bows and arrows. The price is right. Try it you'll like it.

I don't think you will have any regrets if you pick up a P99. I am very pleased with mine and I can't stand plastic guns :) (being a dyed-in-the-wool 1911 man) Find someone who has one, or a local range that may rent them and fire it enough to get used to the trigger and you will be hooked.

I have a sw99 in .40s&w. Great gun. Went today and put though probaly the 1900th rounds though it if I approx right. I didnt do a proper log :(. But Given the direct relation to the two....ill comment on it. Great pistol. I *personaly* would take the p99 in 9x19 over the 40...mainly on looks i like the slide better on it. But the 40 is a great good and they shoot well. The trigger is really nice espcialy if its your first gun, it will spoil you. Yea the DA pull is a little...weird feeling and not perfect but that round is for "emergancys". The SA is uber in my opinion. Super short reset and really light pulls. double taps coming off a da to sa situation is really fast and actualy i find myself having to slow it down to make sure the muzzle is down before i tap off that second round cause i can pull it faster than i think. Yea its no target gun, but for the most part its very accurate. It will group a inch or two at 25 yards easily if you are on it right. It handles any ammo ive thrown at it so far and eats it all alive. I havent had one failure of ANY kind since i bought the gun.

on night sights...try meps before the trijicons. my trijcons are loose in the back adjustment detent. Like they didnt make the adjustment screw wide enough to fit that detent. they wiggle side to side a bit. thats so far the only complaint about the gun ive had. perfect first pistol...it was mine. ive kinda had a hard time finding something to partner with it because it has spoiled me. its soooo thin, and has the nice trigger action, and a decocker... unlike the xd you can decock it which i think is a big thing.

Definat buy if you arent a perticular gun nut...be it 1911's glocks sigs....great gun
