Packing.org

It's been down for a couple weeks. I really hope it isn't down for good.

The alternative is acceptable, but the original was better in terms of both breadth and depth of information.

Back to the post topic -- what happened to packing.org?

The site has always had a lot of down time.

More recently the owner started law school a while back, said he wouldn't have time to keep it up to date and deal with problems at the server.

I never liked the interface of packing.org.

Too many warnings, and disclaimers, and ratings of posts/contributors, created a paranoid feel. There was a lot of good information there, however.

the info was out of date and plain wrong.

I.E you can carry in NV State parks, P/O says no!

I got tired of all the flaming, poorly moderated, and if you put a reference to another website it got deleted.

You can get all you need here, you do not need to go elsewhere.

PDO

has been down since July 24,by far its longest disappearance.
Many of us have attempted to contact Mark Solomon without any success.
Solomon has never been very tactful about advising PDO'S loyal members about any of his plans. The rating system ,despised by almost everyone, was totally his idea.No other site of any type on the web has a rating system to my knowledge. It was always absurd and more than anything else destroyed what was once a gem,the best site on the web.
Last year he asked for volunteers to help update the sites individual states pages.Dozens volunteered and then were left in the lurch when Mark never responded to their offers. The man's manners leave a lot to be desired.
Still ,like so many others, even with all its flaws I miss Packing and hope for its return.
But this time it may be down for the count as it appears Solomon has just pulled the plug and walked away without a word.

Ugh. That's way too much data to be lost.
Does anyone know if he's willing to give/sell the website to anyone? I'd be interested in doing this.
I didn't go there very often but it always had the information I needed when I did visit.

This question gets asked on THR (and other gun boards) at least once or twice a week. Packing.org will often disappear for days or weeks at a time, then suddenly reappear as if nothing happened.

My advice is to forget about Packing.org and never use it as a resource. Delete it from your favorites list and ignore it even if it magically reappears. The site is being neglected by its owner (perhaps even abandoned), the content surely isn't being maintained, and the accuracy of any info on the site has to be seriously questioned. State gun laws change frequently and Packing.org no longer has any credibility whatsoever.

I used to visit packing.org occasionally, but I have heard lately that the info has not been kept up to date.

The packing.org domain name is no longer resolving and the DNS server ns1.packing.org (205.234.206.18) is down. I've also tried pinging PDO's web server by IP address (205.234.206.19). It does not respond either. This has been going on for weeks.

This sort of looks like they either didn't pay the hosting service bill, or they closed the account. Interestingly enough, the owner's (Mark Solomon) personal web site (www.slmn.org) that used to be hosted on the same server as PDO has moved to a new ip address, as well as a new host. From this, I can only gather that he has discontinued hosting service for packing.org.

PDO's owner seems to have lost interest in the site some time ago. He has done very little with it the last two or so years. Additionally, most of the administrators jumped ship as well about two years ago, and the remaining ones have not been able to contact Mark for some time. Since then, the database has become uselessly out of date and the forums had become little more than a cesspool of bickering, profanity, and spam.

jwharris- Someone (I can't recall who) offered to buy packing.org from the owner (Mark Solomon) some time ago, at which time Mark rudely and publicly rebuked the offering buyer, stating that his minimum consideration price would be $1,000,000.

It's a shame to see a pro RKBA site go, and it appears that PDO is out for the count.
