Paper cartridge templates

Can someone quote the dimensions of the templates used in making paper cartridges for the Uberti 1861 36 cal and the 1860 .44? Dowel sizes needed would be a help too. Thanks.

What method do you want to use, the rolling paper or curling paper method? I roll them with rolling papers around a hollowed out pen, lately a 1/4" hollow punch, these are for .44 caliber.

I am not sure that I understand your question but I will give it a shot. If I miss by a mile then just ignore this post.....

A mandrel for rolling a .36 caliber paper cartridge could be made from a 5/16 dowel (.3125 dia) and a few wraps of electrical tape to build it up to the proper diameter. (.360 more or less) I would probably use a 3/8 dowel (.375) with electrical tape to the proper diameter. If you have a lathe or a drill press you could get the larger size dowel and turn or file the outside down to the desired size also, which would be better than the electrical tape method.

It depends on which "style" of paper cartridges you intend to make.

If you intend to make authentic 19th century syle paper cartridges, I can provide you with the resources needed. Here are some I made up recently:



If you intend to make the "modern" style which is not authentic to the original designs, than I cannot help you as I have never done that.

Beautiful rounds. I want to make them in the traditional style and will probably load them both with my cast RB's. I'm just not sure how to measure the length of the paper thats needed or the width at the top and bottom.

Yes, I used Savartkutt's formula with a 3/8" wood dowel and Capandball's construction methods, with some original style 126 grain conical bullets as well. Very nice.
