Paper Cartridges

Are there any good online sources of information on loading paper cartridges for the 1859 - 1863 Sharps type of rifles? A friend of mine has had a Pedersoli for a while, but he's barely had it out of the box for lack of information and he's looking for suggestions.

The guys at http://www.n-ssa.org know. Go ask at their bulletin board and please get back to us. I'd like to roll my own but haven't so far.

BTW, they use to use fine linen which they soaked in potassium nitrate (to make it flammable). It was rolled and a bottom glued on. I think the bullet was also glued (to the linen) but I'm not sure.

I'm trying to find a source of paper. Cigarette paper is good, but too small. I don't want to use glue sticks (like some guys do and the Dixie Gun Work sells such a kit) because I was told that the "glue" can harm the barrel. Use "waterglass" instead. I've casted some conicals but haven't had time to play with my Perdesoli Sharps.

I have loaded up several hundred paper patch bullets, I have also patched my own bullets. Not hard at all, the loading is just a little different then BB loading. It is also a little more time consuming.

Dixie Gun Works has got linen paper sized for rolling your own rifle cartridgesThey also carry gum arabic for glueing them. Ordinary mucilage glue also works for glueing paper cartridges..The cigarette papers are okay for rolling revolver cartridges for C&B revolvers .

Source of paper patch material

I get all my paper patch materials from Buffalo Arms Co in Panderay ID. They have everything for Black Powder shooting. The paper is 100% cotton. Templates for various calibers are also available. For a sealer-glue, I use Rooster Jacket which is a Bullet jacket waterproofer and film lube. it is also available from Buffalo Arms. Swaged bullets in many diameters are also available from the same source. i wrap my bullets with water only. After they have dried, I apply the Rooster Jacket by putting a small amount on the jacket with a cotton Q-tip and the roll the bullet between my thumb and index finger then set them on their base to dry. Usually 30 minutes is long enough for them to dry throughly. I expand the brass for both my 40-65 and 45-70 so that the bullet can be seated with my thumb. The expanders are available at Track of the Wolf.com for both calibers. I hope this helps some of you real shooters.
