Paper shells

Man the crimp designs on the brass bases of those shells are something else!

Is that no longer seen due mostly to the extra expense? or is it really just unnecessary with plastic bodied shells?

I handload 12 gauge paper hulls with 100 grains of FFFg, over powder card, felt cushion wad, paper shot protector and 1 1/8 ounce of shot. This 1200 fps load, with appropriate shot sizes, makes a great upland load!

No, I don't sniff the fired shells...

No doubt

To doubtful Pete:

No.No.No.
You misunderstood me. Sorry. mayhap I was too cryptic. I wanted to try the load....In fact I loaded up some today (have not had the chance to pattern them or chrono).
I just wanted to know if that was a stat from a book or from your own experience.
What, if you don't mind, do you use for the wad column - primarily the size of the cushion wad? I found that, in order to get an OK 6 point crimp on Federal paper hulls, I had to use a 1/4" Fiber wad. When I used 1/2" cushion wads, there was barely enough left to put on a bit of roll crimp.

Ok...

...perhaps we both were a bit "cryptic."

Back to the load. I contacted GOEX requesting information on what powder charge would be needed to actually achieve 1200 fps with a 1 1/8th ounce shot load in a paper 12 gauge hull with card wads. The response was 100 grains of FFFg, (102 grains = 3 3/4 drams).

I use a 1/8" nitro card, a 1/8" felt wad and a paper shot wrapper in once fired Federal paper hulls with a 6 pt. fold crimp. The load also fits with two 1/8" card wads instead of the card felt combination.

This load works best in 2.75" chambers with the old style short/steep forcing cone in order to prevent gas blow-by around the wads. The long forcing cones, now in vogue, do not work well with card wads.

Thanks for that note. I did not know that. I have an old Parker, a LeFever, and an Ithaca Flues. One of them should work. What are you shooting these loads in.?

I use these load in a pre-war stevens double and in a recent NEF single shot with a 3 inch chamber. I should have also noted that 3" chambers with short forcing cones will also work with card wads as the front of the wad column enters the forcing cone before the remainder of the wad column leaves the shotshell body. However the best patterns generally come from matching chamber lengths with any card wad shotshells.
