What's a more durable finish on the 870 Police? One that's parkerized or one that has a gloss blue finish. I know that the parkerized one is more durable then the one with the matte blue finish. :confused:

The military has used Parkerizing for a very long time for a reason.

It is more durable then any type of hot salts blue, whether it is applied over a sand-blast surface (matt blue) or a polished surface (high gloss blue).

I've got a parkerized 870 and I'd wish I'd gotten the blued model, they're a lot smoother, look much nicer and scratches can easily be touched up with cold blue.

Parkerizing might be a little tougher and is a lot more rust resistant as long as it's properly greased, but it's not that much better that it makes up for the above IMO.

Edit;

Forgot to mention that the slide bars on my 870 are blued, and they have never shown any sign of rust in the rain and humidity that it's so often exposed to in my neck o' the woods, so to me that says there's really no need to put up with thick and gritty parkerizing as long as you're up to taking even minimal care of the gun.

Get one of each You will be happier.

I had to choose deep polished blue or parkerized for the 870 Police Magnum SBS Project I've been working on. I almost went with the blued finish but kept true to my original desire to have it parkerized.

Waiting on it to come back as we speak. I plan on doing another one of these some time down the road and will have it in the deep gloss blue.

For me it really boiled down to a preference of physical appearence. Nothing more. Both would keep the metal safe if maintained properly.

I do actually have one of each, and an Express. The parkerized finish will definitely last longer and be more rust resistant. After a few hundred shells, there is no difference in how smooth the action is. The blued gun is definitely more attractive, fwiw - especially with walnut.

Remington says their parkerized finish is 60 percent more durable than a blued finish.

When you get a parkerized gun, disassemble it and spray it soaking wet with CLP Breakfree.
This will dissolve the factory preservative and impregnate the rough finish with a rust protection coating.

One of the reasons parkerizing is so rust resistant is because the rough finish holds lubricants.
Polished blued finishes are so smooth, they don't hold lube and will rust much faster.

Parkerized is a very durable finish, and will protect better than bluing. But it lacks in aesthetic value for me.

I've never had any issues with bluing other than when I was younger and didn't properly oil. Only happened once.

If you don't mind the look, go with parkerizing if durability is your primary concern.
