Update:
As with the first try, all shots were from 25 yards which wasn't idea but those are the rules. All books were strung from wooden target frames with cardboard backing. Books were duct taped in groups of three with no gap in between. NOTE: I'm not trying to make any correlation between books and meat. I just wanted to see if you really could stop bullets with books.

9x19 Winchester White Box 115 grain jacketed ball versus (3x) 445 page books.
I tried the WWB ammo just to see if there was any difference is penetration and especially deformation compared to the Czech ammo. The WWB actually fared a little better with penetration but was just as deformed.
  • Round 1 penetrated through two books and their covers completely+ 147 pages of the third book.
  • Rounds 2,3, and 4 penetrated through two books lodging in the back cover of the second.
Comments: rounds were seriously deformed just as the Sellier and Belloit were. See pic #1

9x19 Winchester 115 grain hollow point versus 3x 445 page books.
Rounds 1,2, and 3 penetrated the first book and lodged themselves in the back cover of the first book. The third round drifted sideways and tore off the edge of the book. All of them expanded nicely. See pic #3. Top are FMJ and the bottom are HP for comparison.

9x19mm FMJ versus 1000 page book + two 245 pages books backing it.
Round 1 penetrated the front cover plus 897 pages
Round 2 penetrated the front cover plus 887 pages
Both rounds 1 and 2 stopped short of the back cover but their dents and rips were propagated all the way to the back cover.
Round 5 slipped about an inch sideways and exited the side of the book
All of the rounds were mangled. See pic #2.

9x18 Makarov 94 grain Silver Bear hollow points all penetrated one book and flattened except one round which became clogged with paper and didn’t expand as well as the others. None of them exited the first book.

9x18mm Makarov 92-grain Brown Bear round ball versus 1000 page book backed with two others.
Round 1 Front cover +707 pages
Round 2 front cover +713 pages
Round 3 front cover + 615 pages
Round 4 Front cover +714 pages

All of the Makarov ball rounds showed little or no signs of deformation

If you look back at the original test and run some numbers you’ll notice that the Makarov ball rounds penetrated the same number of pages whether they had to pass through a middle layer of book cover or not. In both instances the books were cushioned from behind with other books. The evidence suggests that the covers help by cushioning from behind but offer no serious resistance as the bullets pass through. Hmmmmmmm.
For comparisons see pic #4

Finally, I fired two rounds of 7.62x39mm Silver Bear hollow point ammunition from a Yugo SKS against three books all 700 + pages thick. I only fired two rounds since each of them produced a cloud of confetti behind the target stand. I figured that was a dead horse that didn’t need any more beating. Both rounds penetrated through and through.

Here are the Makarov pics from two angles.
Sorry this isn't more elaborate but it was bloody warm and swampy today. After spending the morning doing yardwork I didn't have much more energy left in me.
Conclusions:
1) I'd want at least a thousands pages of book to stop a handgun bullet. I'd want the book cushioned by something that could help absorb the momentum of the round. I'd also rather be a thousand miles away from anyone shooting because only an idiot would count on playing Wonder Woman with her magic bracelets and catching bullets with anything smaller than an M-1 Abrams tank.
2)I'm ready for it to be Fall. It's too dadgum hot and humid outside.
3)You need a WHOLE LOT of books to stop a rifle bullet, even a relatively mediocre round like a 7.62x39. I can't stack that many books and hold them all.
4)It appears that book covers behind the books act as a cushion and help keeping the bullet from penetrating. Once the bullet reaches the cover it doesn't accomplish much.
5)The Makarov is a ridiculously accurate pistol. You'll notice I didn't say "for its size".
6)It's too bloody warm and humid outside.
7)I'm a doofus for forgetting the magazines to the .22 rifle I brought along.
8)I enjoy shooting my old POS Heritage Rough Rider while I wait around for the range to go cold.
9)Dadgum it's hot and humid outside.

Thank You!
Very well done!

Mirrors what I have done.

In my tests, the Winchester 115 gr STHP , performs just like the WWB 115 gr, Personal Protection loads. Even the Chrono results.

FMJ is interesting indeed. Shooting through "barriers" such as glass, metal and other materials *may* dictate one's choice of loading.

Mirrors what I have done also. And a .38 shooting 130 grain ball doesn't penetrate nearly as far into the books as the 9mm ball does. In some cases, it was about 1/2 as far.
