Passed on a S&W 15...

Oldbear ,

If you were looking at a used pickup truck , one which you felt was a bit over priced , and the rear fenders were rusted through , would you make that a bargaining point with the dealer , or would you pretend that the truck is cherry?

I made an offer , my offer was soundly rejected with no room for negotiation , I excused myself and left the pawn shop. No insults or impolite words were exchanged. Was I disgusted? Sure. That's why I left the shop. I voted with my feet.

"Sometime customers are more trouble than they are worth"..
"I hope I'm wrong, but from the tone and tenner of your posting, it sounds as if you may be one of the above."

I reject your insinuation , while respecting your right to have stated it.

'Ski.

bannockburn,

The lanyard ring drew me in like a siren's song. Haven't seen many old M&Ps with that feature , save for the Lend Lease & Victory versions , which came later. The revolver I am about to acquire is # 162666.

Anyone care to date that?

I'd be the last one to pass judgement on a pawn shop.

The one here in town?

The help are all unfriendly, superior beings who purport to know more about guns then I myself could even dream of ever knowing!

Prices are sky high, and non-negotiable.

I don't even go there anymore.

Very nice Model 15.

The USAF used the Model 15 for a long time for security forces work, clean up till the early '90s.

Oh what I'd give to drive up to the gate to see the air cops with S&W .38s! Alas, days gone by... though I don't blame them for wanting more firepower in these days of terroristas, banditos, and active shooters.

Not really a Victory Model because there is no V prefix with the serial number. But definitely wartime issue, most likely issued to some security guard at a factory.

Understood. Sometime during the production run Smith got the idea of adding the "V" prefix , yours was made prior to that.

Eve. in time of war there are marketing considerations , it seems.

Fine war era revolver , that's for sure.

....at the top of the side plate there was evidence of a minute bit of binding ; the plating of the side plate looked ever so slightly raised. I took that to mean that the side plate had been removed , and upon replacement it did not quite slip into position - bound slightly

I would be much more concerned about a side plate was possibly warped due to Bubba forcing it closed than a few corroded screws that could be replaced with polished stainless steel ones. I would have walked too.
