Day 1
( When I say shots I mean hits and not actual shots fired )

I got down there around 0815 on friday and class started at 0900. The first three hours were in the class room going over range safety, manipulation of the weapon, ballistics, different types of zeros, different shooting positions, differences between technical and tactical shooting. Then we had lunch. After lunch we zeroed the rifles starting at 25 yards from prone, once they were zeroed at 25 yards we went back to 50 yards and fired from prone ( we used the Battle Zero ). Then we did a dry run through the different positions ( low ready, high ready, indoor ready, variations of kneeling, variations of squating, variations of sitting, variations of prone, ) then we loaded the rifles and went from low ready to firing a single shot from about 25 yards and repeated this multiple times ( apprx. 10-15 ), then went back to about 50 yards and did the same thing. We then went back up to about 25 yards and did the same drill except we fired 2 shots, then we go back to 50 yards and did the same thing. Next we went back up to about 25 yards and from low ready we fired 2 rounds and reloaded ( apprx. 10-15 ) Then we went back to about 50 yards and started from low ready and fired 2 shots and reloaded. All of this was on paper targets. Next we moved to steel 1/4 steel silouttes and did the same drills ( Low Ready fire a single shot at about 25 yards, Low Ready fire a single shot at about 50 yards, Low Ready fire 2 shots from 25 yards, Low Ready fire 2 shots at about 50 yards, ) Then they gave us a block of instruction on cleaning and maintenance. Class ended around 1800. There were 8 students and 3 instructors.

Day 2
( When I say shots I mean hits not actual shots fired )

I got down there around 0830 and class started around 0900. First we started on the paper targets and started from Low Ready and fired 2 shots from around 25 yards. Next we cleared the weapons and practiced going into the different positions with the weapons, then we readied the weapons and fired from the different postitions starting from Low Ready we did this from 25 and 50 yards on steel targets. Then we went back up to 25 yards started from Low Ready fired 2 shots then as we went down to kneeling we reloaded and fired 2 shots from kneeling ( repeated about 10-15 times ) Next we did the same drill at 50 yards. Next we went back up to 25 yards started at Low Ready fired to shots then as we went down to kneeling we reloaded and fired 2 shots from kneeling the we reloaded as we went down to prone and fired 2 shots ( repeated this about 5-10 times ) then we did the same drill at 50 yards. Then we practiced malfunction drills by placing spent cartridges in a magazine with live rounds we did this multiple times also. then we intentionaly caused a double feed and practiced clearing these, then we practiced mortering clearance drills. Then we went into to off angle shooting on strong side starting with 90 degrees and going to 180 degrees and then we did that on weak side. Next we went to 100 yards and started from Low Ready and fired 2 shots on 12 inch steel targets. Then it was time for a lunch break. After lunch we went to the 125 yard line and starting at Low Ready we fired 2 shots and then went to kneeling fired 2 more shots. Then we practiced going from strong side to weak side shooting firing 2 shots we practiced this a lot. Then we cleared the weapons and practiced going into offset shooting starting on the strong side at 1:30 fired 2 times and then we repeated this a few times then we went to 3:00 fired 2 shots and we repeated this a few times, then we we to 4:30 fired to shots and we repeated this a few times, then we went to 11:30 fired 2 shots and we repeated this a few times, then we went to 9:00 fired 2 shots and we repeated this a few times, then we we to 7:30 fired 2 shots and we repeated this a few times. Then we went to weak side and fired 2 shots from 11:30, 9:00 and 7:30 We then cleared the weapons and talked about cover and how to use it, then we did a dry run on 2 different cover simulators ( vertical and horizonital ) next the class was split in half and 1 half did the veritcal cover drill while the other half did the horizonital cover drill the target was 125 yards away and was a 12 inch steel . I did the Vertical cover drill first I started about 10 yards away and dashed up to the the cover and first I had to fire from standing on the right side of the vertical cover and fire 2 shots and then I went down to kneeling and fired 2 shots on right side of the cover next I transitioned to weak side and then fired 2 shots the left side of cover then I went up to standing and fired 2 shots on the left side. I then went over to the horizonital cover drill I started about 10 yards away and dashed up to the cover and went to double kneel and fired 2 shots using the top part of cover as a rest then I lowered myself and leaned over and used the next part of the cover as a rest and fired 2 shots next I went prone and fired 2 shots then I moved my body to fire 2 shots from the hole in the bottom of the cover and remaing prone rotated the rifle and fired 2 shots then I turned my body around and fired 2 shots from supine. Then we went over to the paper targets at 50 yards and starting from Low Ready fired 2 shots then went down to standing and fired 2 shots. Class ended around 1730. There were 8 students and 5 instructors.

Day 3
( When I say shots I mean hits not actual shots fired )

I got to class around 0825 and class started around 0900. First we went on the paper targets from 25 yards and he had us put 2 shots in a 1 inch square on the head. Next he had us do hammer drills first with 2 shots then 3 then 4 then 5. Next we moved up to 10 yards and did handgun transitions we did this mulitiple times. Next we went up to about 5-7 yards and we did retention drill with both strong and weak sides. Next we went up to the target close enough that we could jab the the target with the muzzle, he then had us jab the target and then hammer fire 2 shots we did this a few times until there was no target left. Then we did box drills with steel targets at 100 yards starting off firing to shots then going forward about 10 yards fire 2 shots then go right about 10 yards fire 2 shots then go back about 10 yards fire 2 shots and then go left about 10 yards and fire 2 shots. Then we did box drills but we fire 2 shots then go right about 10 yards fire 2 shots then go forward about 10 yards then fire 2 shots then go left about 10 yards fire 2 shots then go back about 10 yards fire 2 shots. Then we went in to moving and shooting we started back around the 50 yard line and then we went toward the target firing as we moved up to about the 20 yard line reloaded and then we went back to about the 50 yard line firing as we moved we practiced this many times. Then we had lunch. After lunch we split into 2 groups 1 group went and did a exercise using cover first you started about 10 yards from cover you had to dash up to the cover and fire 2 shots on the 125 yard steel target if you ended up firing more then 2 times to hit the target twice you had to swith positions after the third shot then you advanced up to the next cover fire 2 shots on the 125 yard steel target if you ended up firing more then 2 times to hit the target twice you had to swith positions after the third shot then you move back to the next cover and fire 2 shots on the 125 yard steel target if you ended up firing more then 2 times to hit the target twice you had to swith positions after the third shot then you advance on to the vertical cover and fire 2 shots on the 125 yard steel target if you ended up firing more then 2 times to hit the target twice you had to swith positions after the third shot then you move over and take as much cover as you can by the fire hydrant and go prone and fire 2 shots on the 125 yard steel target if you ended up firing more then 2 times to hit the target twice you had to swith positions after the third shot then you are done. The other drill was you dash up about 5 yards fire 2 shots from standing then move right about 3 yards kneel fire 2 shots move right about 3 yards sit or squat fire 2 shots move right about 3 yards sit or squat fire 2 shots then move right about 3 yards go prone fire 2 shots. Then we did vehicle movement starting in the driver seat with a loaded mag but nothing chambered and the weapon laid down we would chamber a round while we were picking up the rifle and then firing 2 shots from the drivers window on a steel siloutte at about 100 yards. Next we cleared the weapon put a loaded mag in the we put the weapon down beside us and while we picked it up chambered a round and fired 2 shots at a steel siloutte about 25 yards away then we got out of the vehicle and fire 2 shots at a 12 inch steel about 100 yards away from the V between the open door and the door frame then we moved forward closing the door and fired 2 shots at a 12 inch steel over the hood and from beside the wheel then we went prone and fired 2 shots at a 12inch steel about 100 yards away from under the vehicle then we went back to the rear side and fire 2 shots on a 12 inch steel about 100 yards away from beside the trunk up and over the vehicle then we moved to the rear and fired 2 shots on a 12 inch steel about 100 yards away from kneeling. After that we went into the burm and learned about engaging vehicles by shooting a car from the front through the windshield and from the side. After that we went on to moving targets we went to about the 30 yard line and a moving humin siloutte would go across and we would have to shoot the assigned ballon ( Head, Chest, Groin ). Class ended around 1700. There were 9 students and 5 instructors.

Weapons used by other people

5 ARs of different makes
1 Sig 556
1 AK ( Had been heavily modified )
1 M1 Carbine

2 ARs went down the first that went down had a Kaboom and the second the Gas Key was leaking.

While there I got to fire my first suppressed rifle an AR-15, I also got to fire my first SBR and my first Full-Auto ( it was an SBR ).

I learned many things, I also learned what I need to work on such as getting in a sold postion faster and shooting weak side better.

Things I am going to change with my equipment

Get rid of that heavy barrel ( That thing gets heavy )
Get rid of that Millet DMS-1 ( It works great but when I have to shoot weakside and my left eye is a lot worse then my right I can not get good eye relief )
Use Rail Covers ( Those rails are sharp and they get pretty hot )
Get some Ranger Tabs

I am sure I got some things out of order or forgot to mention somethings we did but, if you have any questions just ask. I would recommend this class to anyone that is serious about be proficient with their weapons. Pat Goodale is very knowledgeable and is very hands on in his training.

I did not have time to take many pics but here some are

good course description

Thanks tacweapon for the good recap. It sounds like a good course, and probably a lot of fun too.

I took defensive hand gun 1 from Pat Goodale, and I can see some similarities in how Pat progresses from basic to more advanced concepts.

From what you saw at your course, would a basic unmodified AK make sense for the course?

Any iron sights?

Thanks again for the write up.

A unmodified AK would work for the course but if can I would get the modifaction that allows you to use the safety without breaking your master grip, and maybe a red dot site if you want it, the guy that had and AK there was running an Aimpoint Micro T1 in a scout configuration

Thanks Tacweapon!

I have a yugo underfolder and I've wondered if it would be suitable for a carbine training course. Sounds like it might work out but not be ideal.

Have you taken any other training courses that you can compare this to?

thanks for the great review and the pics, it is good to know that there are other people on thr actually training instead of going to a square range and getting all turned on by there dime size groups! :)
thanks again.

what brand were they do you know?

I used to shoot for groups when I was on my schools rifle team and it was fun but I would much rather shoot in a way that is practical then just sit some where for 15 minutes and fire 5 shots and get 1 hole at a hundred yards and the best way to do that is to take a class and learn how to do that the right way

I am not sure the brand of the rifle that had a Kaboom but the rifle with the loose gas key was a S&W M&P but the onsite armorer fixed it and they were able to finish the class
