So I got several pounds of PB a while back talked it up a bit and got the impression it's not a good choice. I have a fair amount of other powders but this has been on the shelf for a few years it's time to use it.
What your thoughts?
I shoot a lot of 9mm, 10mm, 40s&w, 45acp,
What have you done with it and were you happy with it?
Thanx

It as one of my favorite 45acp powders along with 5066.
Put my last several lbs. of it thru my Thompson, load was 5.5 grs. of PB with a Zero 230 gr. FMJ.
Ran like a champ and shot well enough in 1911's that I would still be using it if it was available.

Too bad both have been discontinued. Oh well, it's back to Bullseye.

PB was the first powder I used when I started reloading 6 years ago. I finished off my first pound of it recently. It worked well for 38 special with 125 gr. FP plated Berry's bullets. I used it mostly for 380 acp loads with 90 gr. Hornady XTPs, and 100 gr. plated bullets from Berry's and Everglades. It meters better than some other powders such as Red Dot. Good luck with it!

I used a couple pounds during the last shortage. It was dirty and it metered inconsistent for me. It was OK in 9mm and ended up being rather accurate in 38. Dirty shooting though. I sold the remainder off at the end of the last shortage.

It was the perfect powder for starting my wife and kids shooting trap. 1150 fps loads and only about 6500 psi. Softest shooting lowest recoiling loads ever.

PB is a great "single-base" powder from IMR, which is no longer offered. It is excellent when a cool-running "semi-fast" powder is needed for loads with lead bullets. "PB" is the chemical symbol for Lead, which is where it gets its name.

IMR 7526 was generally considered equivalent to Unique, and IMR PB was generally shown as equivalent to W231.

I haven't used it, but you are sitting on a gold mine. Put up a "for sale" flyer at your local Trap, Skeet, or Sporting Clays Club, saying Best offer, and watch the long knives come out. You'll have guys offering to sign in blood, offer up their first born (even though that first born will be about 40-50), and generally trip over each other to get it.

I tried it in 45acp and found that it did not work well with small primers, it lost a LOT of velocity compared to large primers. I found a good load for it in 40 and used it up.

As for where the name PB originated, it stands for “Porous Base”.

There used to be an orphan can sitting on the shelf at a local gun shop in eastern NC. I haven been there lately, but it sat there a good ten years and through the last shortage.
It was priced at $25-35 ( sorry can’t remember).
The can was labeled 8 ounces!!!!!!!!! Never could figure that one out?
