Does anyone else have this problem with their PC 9? I'll shoot a ,say, three shot goup with it and every time I''l have two shots close together with a third about four inches below the others. If I shoot a five shot group I'll get one, maybe two shots four inches away from the main group. Ten shots or more will have practically two groups, the main group where it should be with three or more shots about four inches low. This happens with every load I've tried, factory and handloads, with ghost-ring sights or scope, and no matter who shoots it. The gun would be pretty accurate if it wasn't for this. Any idea as to what is going on? I paid a lot of money for the thing but if I can't fix this problem I'll be forced to sell it at a considerable loss.

Theres a common problem called 4+1 syndrome, where the first round thats hand cylcled into the action will hit a slightly different place than the rest of the rounds in the magazine. This might be happenning with yours. You might try inserting the loaded magazine with the bolt closed and racking the action fast rather than using the bolt release and check your groups. What range are you shooting at anyway? Mine was a tac driver but I never shot it past 60-75 yards. I know they only come with one magazine have you tried different mags?

Yeah, I tried several different magazines just as a matter of course. My range is 25 yards. About the 4+1 syndrome: there's no consistancy to the stray shots. Sometimes it's the first, sometimes third, other times it's toward the end of the string. I can't find a pattern. Yours is a tack driver. It's nice to know that at least it's possible to get that kind of accuracy out of the gun. Let me ask you something. How tight do you have the screw for the barrel band, the one that holds the sling swivel stud? How about the action screw on the bottom of the stock, just forward of the magazine well? I was thinking that maybe this might have something to do with it.

Please don't take offense at these questions:

How are you shooting it? Freehanded or with a good rest? Have you had someone else shoot it to see if they get similar results? How much have you shot it?

The reason I ask is that often the gun is blamed when it is the shooter. The PC9 has a funky trigger pull that takes some getting used to. If you haven't tried any of the above please do so before you write the gun off and take a big loss on it.

If you still can't work things out with it and want to sell it at a loss let me know ;)

I actually sold mine about a year ago but I did fully disasemble it a few times and just made sure those screws were snug. I did catch that action screw working loose a few times but I dont think that would cause stray shots like your describing. You might be able to get your dealer to ship it back for you, otherwise I'd give ruger a call. Its no fun waiting but times flys in retrospect and that rifle CAN be made to shoot. One last thing you might try, treat yourself to a new .357 or .375 bore brush and scrub the heck out of it with with lead/copper/rust remover. It may have been sitting at ruger for a few years with a dirty barrel. Good luck

Yeah, I know what you mean about that trigger. The first time I tried it I wondered if maybe there was a problem with it, then I found out they're all that way. No offense taken, but man, I've shot everything from target .22's to funky old milsurps from the turn of the century and the only time I've experienced anything like this is with loose scope mounts but that isn't the problem as it does it even with open sights. I have had other people shoot it just to make sure it wasn't me and it's always the same problem. By the way, the stray shots are always low, even in the main group the shots are strung laterally. I reload, so in addition to factory fodder I've tried 88gr. bullets to 147gr., lead, f.m.j., hollow points, and slow powders (HS-7, Bluedot) to HP-38, always with the same results. I always get a percentage of the hits 4 to 5 inches lower than the main group (at 25 yards). It's like one out of four shots usually, but could be the third or fifth, any order. I shoot from a ground rest using sand bags, always brings out the best accuracy for my other rifles. In any case, thanks for taking the time to try to figure out MY problem.

Is the barrel showing any odd wear marks? The randomness makes me think of two mechanical options: loose sights or loose/poorly fitted action.
