I went to the range today to rent a 4.5” PDP and a Gen5 Glock 34 . They told me when I called that they had the 4.5” model , but when I got there it was the 4” model . Maybe not a fair comparison , because of the longer barrel length of the Glock , but the PDP had the better trigger . I shot the Glock a lot more accurately than the PDP . So much so that I am not even going to risk buying the 5” PDP without being able to shoot it first . The bonus is , I also have a GSSF coupon for the purchase .

I'm glad you were able to compare the two pistols you are considering.
A number of years ago I was thinking about getting into competitive shooting and wanting to shoot in factory classes at a local range.
I shot 5 or 6 handguns and had it narrowed down to 2. The Glock 34 and XD mod2 Tactical with a 5".
I asked one of a guys that helped run the league and worked there what he would choose. He said the XD as I shot it better. In his opinion you need to change the trigger and sights on the Glock. The XD was ready to go as is. Note: he was a Glock guy and carried a 34.
If you have bought the Glock enjoy it! If still deciding maybe give the XD a try. I know that my nephew enjoys mine 🤔

I don’t like the grip safety on the XD . But I go into it knowing that I am either going to put an optic on the Glock , or put some competition fiber front sight and adjustable rear black sights on it . For now I can live with the Gen5 34 trigger .

You mentioned the trigger. I watched a video the other day on Glocks performance trigger. It maybe worth a look.

Glad you like the G34 Red Rick. If I had to do it all over again, I’d have chosen the G34 over the G17.5. Right now my new-to-me PDP Pro 5” is outshooting my Glock 17. I think the mechanical accuracy is pretty much the same but for me, the PDP trigger makes accurate hits easier. I put the performance trigger in my G17 but didn’t notice much difference. I replaced it with a Timney last week and the result was dramatic; much, much lighter and more single-actiony if you’re in to that.

Is it just the trigger of the G17 holding you back, or does the extra barrel length and perhaps different balance of the PDP make a difference.

I always wrestle with a possible Glock purchase, and while I recognize the G17 would probably be more versatile, and there are legions of YouTube videos saying G17 will do anything a G34 will, as a 1911 shooter, the G34 always seems to balance better for me.

I’ve been gravitating to longer barreled 9mms for target shooting and plates (I’m not a competitor, just an old guy who shoots a metric ton of ammo). I too find better balance with the 5” to 5.5” barrels, along with better recoil control and firing cadence. I’m not sure that switching to a G34 would give me an advantage necessarily over my G17 but I suspect it would “feel” better if that makes any sense to you. Overall for me, trigger is more important than barrel length when it comes to shooting with a dot as I typically do on polymer guns. With irons, I definitely benefit from the longer sight radius - pretty significantly. Every 1/2” of sight radius takes about 1/2” off my groups at 25 yards.

The PDP as I have it set up now feels very different than my G17. Overall weight, weight distribution, grip and trigger all favor the PDP right now for me, and it shows in my groups. However, the G17 with the Timney trigger is now much hotter in my hands than it used to be and it sure can give the Walther a run for its money. Even without red dots, though, my CZ TS2 Orange and S2 Orange are still more accurate in my hands. And, they should be - they weigh about 3lbs and have -2lb triggers.

I was reminded of one of the reasons why I hate indoor shooting ranges also . There were 2 people shooting long guns while I was there . I was using double hearing protection , but my friend wasn’t . He was ready to leave before I ever started shooing . The sound didn’t bother me , but the percussion did . We both have ranges at our houses where we don’t have to go to a range , but I wanted to rent a couple of pistols to tryout before buying and he had just bought a revolver and the LGS that owns the range gives you a voucher for a 1 hour range session , so we went . He hated it . I wanted to try some more pistols while I was there , but I could tell that he was miserable , so we left after I tried two . They also have a crazy policy that you have to have someone with you to rent a pistol there . I told them that was a crazy policy and they said that was something their lawyers told them to do . They have had a couple of suicides there .

I used to complain that only a g26 seemed accurate in my hands.

Then my local ffl got an old used gen 3 g19. Still has the non mim parts and stuff. Heine sights.

It was 350 otd I think. I was shocked at the range when I was dropping rounds into the same hole at ten yards!

Yep, it's a keeper. Was gonna let it be a beater for the car safe but I just like it too much.
