On a visit to my sister-in-laws home she showed me a Pedersoli musket. Flintlock and it has GRICE1762 engraved by the hammer. It has quite a bit of light rust on all the steel parts. What can i use to clean it up ?

She claims her deceased husband paid 800 bucks for it through the Pawtucket Rangers for parade and range use. Any idea of it's value? Thanks in advance for any help.

Outrigger,

Pedersoli marks their Brown Bess reproduction (Model S.260) with "Grice 1762" on the tail of the lock. I don't have a current price list of theirs, but you might be able to research with their model number.

A quick check of my Dixie Gun Works catalog (2003) lists the Pedersoli 2nd Model British Brown Bess musket at $765: $625 in kit form.

Methinks the Pedersoli Brown Bess are representative of the 2nd Model. It had a high comb to prevent soldiers from aiming and a shorter 42" bbl (the First Model had a 46" bbl). Depending on the hardware, it may be the India Pattern which would be more Napoleonic than American Revolution. I'd have to see one and compare it against photos in my copy of Bailey.

Well, if she'll let me at it to clean it up and save it from slow death by rust, I'll take some measurements. Looks like fun to shoot, but would for me be mostly a wall-hanger.

Thanks

To take off light surface rust, simply rub some Breakfree CLP on it with your finger tip. Wait a while and you should be able to wipe it off. It contains penetrants or solvents in addition to lube. No steel wool or anything is necessary. If you keep the metal parts coated with a finger tip's worth of CLP in the future, you should not have a recurrence of rust. HTH
