I love lever actions, I love the calibers they come in, but my eyes are no longer so happy with open sights.

Are there receiver mounted appeture sights that one could mount on a Marlin 336 30-30?

I am very happy with my XS ghost ring sights on my 336. I have the same sights on my 39A to allow for cheap practise.

There is a plethora of peep/ghost ring sights for the Marlin platform.

Willam's Foolproof target receiver sight:

They also make the same sight without the target knobs, which is better for a hunting rifle. Only reason I have this one was I got it very cheap on eBay.

The nice thing about these is the very fine adjustments, and the fact it becomes a Ghost Ring sight when you screw the small Target aperature out.

Cool

What did you do with the regular rear sight? Lower it all the way or take it off?

That is just what I was thinking about.

One of the great things about the Williams FP without the target knobs is that they're almost impervious to casual tampering once they've been zeroed. That's one reason they called it the "Fool Proof".

Another is that the apertures are quickly and easily interchangable. They're available in two styles and several different sizes so you can tailor your sight picture to exactly suit your eyes and your shooting conditions.

An excellent option, IMO, is to add a "Firesight" FO front bead and open-topped hood. Makes for a much quicker and more precise sight picture for us bifocal clad folks. I have them on my 1895G, 336 and 39M. Highly recommended set-up.

The ghost ring works great with my 60 year old eyes. I replaced both front and rear sights with the ghost system.

All of my Marlin LAs came from the factory drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. I understand that this is no longer the case.

Williams has a version of their "Guide" model that uses the rear two scope mount holes. It's not as sophisticated a design as the FP (lacks micrometer adjustments), but is just as practical and a good deal less expensive to boot. It can be had with a Firesight front of the correct height as a set for about $35-40 from several sources. Quick and easy DIY installation.

Another advantage, again MO, is that the traditional side mounted models quite often do not require that the front sight be replaced in order to be zeroed. IME, both the Williams FP/5D and Lyman 66 have more than enough adjustment to be used with the factory front sights on Marlin LAs.

I believe that Marlin quit providing the means to install a traditional receiver sight as a cost cutting measure, which I can understand given the economic realities we all have to cope with these days. I understand it; I don't have to like it.

If your 336 is a relatively older model, there's no problem. On the latest ones it would require that two holes be drilled and tapped. Around here 'smiths charge about $15-20 per hole for the job. Worth the cost, IMO, for the advantages a traditional receiver sight has over most of the top-mounted designs in terms of relative susceptability to damage, range of adjustment and the ability to be dismounted for scope use and replaced without loss of zero. YMMV.

FWIW, when my aging eyes needed the assistance of fiber optics to regain good definition in and fast acquisition of my sight picture I used the same height blade as the stock one. In every case only very minor adjustments were necessary to rezero.

Current production Marlins are drilled and tapped for a scope mount, and there are many aperture sights available that can be mounted to the receiver. XS Sights offers a ghost ring sight, another is Skinner Sights, which can be used either with a screw-in aperture or without it. Both of these are well made products.

Other choices include Brockman, Wild West Guns, Grizzly, etc...

I currently use an XS Ghost Ring on my shortened 336C and a Skinner sight on my 336XLR.

The Williams FP receiver peep rear sight and Williams front Fire Sight works for me. The factory buckhorn rear sight is bad news IMO.
If you get the current production 336W model, drilling and tapping is required to install the XS Ghost Ring front sight since the current production "W" model has only 1 screw holding on the front sight ramp.
