Peep sight on AK47 receiver cover.

I was sure that somebody offered the sight, or the service of mounting one, to give something of a Galil sight setup. But lots of Google time has led to nothing. I was sure that Krebs offered it.

Anybody know? A custom gunsmith who mounts a good peep sight for an AK, near the eye where it is supposed to be?

It was a Krebs offering that has been pulled. They are supposed to be coming out with an improved version, but they've been saying that for a while now....
 
Vulcan makes one, but it's pretty pricey and I've read enough about the operation that I don't want to do business with them.
 
I know of three AK gunsmiths that install receiver cover sights:

Tony Rumore of Tromix (http://www.tromix.com)
(Though I have only seen Tony's rifles with H&K type peep sights, not AR-15 peep sights.)

Will Hayden at Red Stick Firearms (http://www.redstick-firearms.com)
(Mostly seems to use H&K type peep sights, but does use AR-15 peep sights on his Galil style AK builds.)

, and as already mentioned in this thread, Marc Krebs of Krebs Custom (http://www.krebscustom.com).
(So far I have only seen receiver cover peep sights on his KTR-03 series rifle builds.)

Unfortunately, these days these smiths are so busy building complete rifles for customers and distributors, that they seldom have time anymore to do more minor gunsmithing jobs like installing sights. Last I heard Tony Rumore had a waiting list nearly a year long, and I think Marc Krebs is almost as busy. You can e-mail all of them through their websites, but I think Will Hayden is probably the only one who may still be available to install sights on a customer sent-in rifle.

Tech Sights is in the process of manufacturing a "no alterations required" rear peep sight along the lines of their 10/22 and SKS offerings. IIRC, it will be available in Spring '08.

If it's half as good as the TS I have on my SKS, I'll be overjoyed.
 
I have seen the pics of the Tech Sights product. I am not a fan of that design, the way it hangs off the back of the receiver just looks ugly.

And I have an underfolder, so the Tech Sights sight would not work well. But thanks for the tips ya'll.

I can't wait for the TechSights. A guy had one on his 10/22 the last range trip and I fell in love. It'll really transform my Saiga, if it fits.
 
The problem with sights mounted on the dustcover are that they shift. If it is a standard AK dustcover, it can shift while mounted (double plus ungood). Even if it is a tightened up dustcover system (e.g. KTR-03S), it may not rezero exactly if you remove the cover for cleaning. Ask me how I know. :banghead:

Krebs' new sight/rail combo seems to be the way to go, but the last time I checked it was expected to be offered "in mid July". We still haven't seen it. Perhaps he just failed to specify which year. ;)

I'm just speculating here. If you can get a dust cover with a picatinny rail on it, couldn't you just put on an AR rear sight, or would it be too high?
 
It would likely be too high, but the bigger problem is that the dust cover fits loosely on the top of the receiver and is ordinarily too unstable to use as a rear sight base. You would have the worst wandering zero in the world if you tried it with most AKs.

The TS will likely use the rear tang screws as a mounting point, to make the mount mo' solid.
 
IIRC, the Tech-Sight one attaches to the rear of the reciever and isn't attached to the dustcover at all.
 
The peep sights that replace the factory open sight work pretty well and are super easy to install.

Just an idea.
 
I saw a prototype of Kreb's rail at a gun show this past weekend. Looked pretty good - it included a little mechanism for lifting the rail off for disassembly without losing zero. The price they gave me was $275, when it's released (didn't ask for a release date, because I'm really more interested in Tech-Sights' peep than a rail).
 
The rail costs almost as much as the gun... I was really hoping it wouldn't be that expensive.

For 275 you can get a Kobra red dot and slap it on to your side rail and be more than fine.
 
The "problem" with the Kobra is that it sits very high. Some people don't like it for that reason, others have no issue with it.

I agree that the Krebs rail is spendy, but probably a good unit. The Tech Sight intrigues me...the main difference between the two will be the fact that the Krebs rail allows you to mount a scope (well, that and the price).

It would be quite high, and the main problem (instability) is unresolved.
