The final step in my AR-10 project is upon us: The Pelican case.

My question is wether to lay out the foam insert so the rifle is in one piece or to set it up so the receivers are separate. I am looking at a Pelican 1750, so either setup is dimensionally feasible.

Please discuss. Other case design insights would be greatly appreciated.

Total preference on your part, bud.
Personally I would cut it out to match the rifle in the assembled configuration but that's because I don't want to have to disassemble my rifle every time I leave the range. Plus the only time I want my rifle apart is when I'm cleaning it.

I have a Pelican for my scoped M1A, and made a cutout for the rifle, and 3 slots for 2 mags each. It looks good, and certainly protects the gun. On the other hand, it is big, heavy, cumbersome, and take up more space than it should.

I generally leave the case at home when I go to the range, and put the gun in a soft case along with all the other rifles. It is easier to transport that way. The pelican is really only good for air travel, or if you have a 4wd test course between you and your range.

Exactly the kind of stuff I don't think about until later. Thanks for that.

I know the Pelicans are heavy and cumbersome, but I will be flying with it at some point, I do make a point of taking at least one firearm along when I go 4 wheeling, and I actually intend to take it to the range; many of fellows at the ranges around here are either straight up idiots, or unbelievably inconsiderate when it comes to other people's gear. I need that indestructability.

The only real reason to case a rifle while disassembled is if keeping the dimensions of the case as small as possible is the most important consideration. If you gain nothing otherwise, it makes sense to keep the rifle assembled.

I had to share this because I thought it was cool. Sorry if it's off topic. Also not my picture -- again...sorry

you COULD buy 2 cases. 1 for travel (small case/disassembled rifle) and 1 for car rides (larger case for assembled rifle). Another thing to consider is how much do you plan to accessorize your AR? That could determine how you go about making your decision too.

Not really that off topic, it's an interesting AR magazine storage solution; I'll keep that in mind for when my AR-10's smaller cousins get their own Pelican cases. Contents of that case could certainly make beautiful music.

As far as accessories go, not too much. Just the optics that are currently on there (Eotech 552/ 3x Magnifier), and a Harris bipod. All I want to keep in the case are a trio of ten-round magazines and, at least for now, make provisions for three 25-rounders for when I move out from behind the AR curtain. And maybe a little kit of AR toiletries; lube, boresnake the like.
