Pencil Eraser for Lead Buildup on Cylinder?

If you have time, I suspect I am not the only one who would like to see a picture of the area you are describing.

Also, if you never did this, would the revolver eventually malfunction?

No, but it would continue to buildup. Am planning on selling most of my guns so this is on my radar screen.
 
Pencils aren’t actually made of lead. And bullets aren’t made of graphite. So….
 
I have some old Pre-Eisenhower silver dollars that when I was a kid I removed the patina from with a pencil eraser. .
It was a mistake, the silver has scratches almost like 1000 grit sandpaper.

Wet sanding with 3000 grit might also do about the same as a pencil eraser.
