At the request of Governor Ed Rendell (D), the Pennsylvania House Judiciary Committee has tentatively scheduled a meeting for Tuesday, November 20 at 10:00am, to vote on several anti-gun measures. The package of bills include one-gun-a-month, a requirement for individuals to report lost or stolen firearms, and legislation that would overturn Pennsylvania’s current preemption law.

House Bill 18, sponsored by State Representative Dwight Evans (D-Philadelphia), would further provide for limitations on the regulation of firearms and ammunition by local municipalities. State preemption regulating firearms was enacted by the legislature to avoid the possibility of thousands of separate firearm laws across the Commonwealth. Without preemption there would be a myriad of local firearms laws making compliance impossible for law abiding gun owners. In addition, this proposed legislation may also be in conflict with Article 1, Section 21 of the Constitution of Pennsylvania which states "The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the state shall not be questioned."

House Bill 22, "one-gun-a-month" legislation, sponsored by State Representative John Myers (D-Philadelphia), will prohibit law-abiding citizens from purchasing more than one handgun at a time, and impose a 30-day waiting period between single handgun purchases.

House Bill 29, "Lost or Stolen Firearms” legislation, sponsored by State Representative Jewell Williams (D-Philadelphia), would make it a crime to fail to report the loss or theft of a firearm to police within 24 hours of discovering the firearm missing. This proposal would criminalize victims of crime and is ineffective.

God i can't stand Rendell. All he does is raise taxes, and now he must target guns. It amazes me how some people that are so mentally challenged can get elected.

"one-gun-a-month" legislation, sponsored by State Representative John Myers (D-Philadelphia),

I saw a debate with this John Myers i believe who said something along the lines of, "You know i can't understand why anyone would ever want more than one gun a month anyway," as his reasoning for supporting this bill. That logic makes absolutely no sense at all. Okay, you might not want to get two TVs in one month, but would you want someone to tell you that you can't? It's limiting your rights. If you give these gun grabbers an inch, they will take a mile. This is why we need to vote them down.

do everything you can guys, we didnt think that microstamping was going to pass arnie out here in cali, but he got us good....burn up the phone lines.

None of them have a chance. The reps in PA know that voting on gun control here is career suicide. That's why these bills die in comittee where they should. Even if they get past committee, they stand very little chance in a floor vote.

The beauty of our form of gvernment is that d***head, I mean Rendell, cant force the legislature to do anything.

All must oppose this legislation.

Well I sent a message to every one of them - signed it with my name and address. I hate Street - he's one of the most incompetent politicians (isn't that a redundant phrase!) there are. It's so easy to say it's the guns and not his inept leadership or police dept. For instance, they knew the kid that killed Officer Harris was the same one who held up a convenience store a week prior - did they issue a warrant for him? No. If they had, and seriously looked for him Harris might still be alive today. They blame it on the guns when it's a faulty family structure (non existant) and a stupid code of silence the inner city people practice. We don't hear about licensed permit holders commiting crimes - no, only repeat criminals. Lock em' away (being on THR prohibits me from saying what I really feel) and forget about them. I have no sympathy for a criminal at all. We all have choices to make in life - they choose to prey on others and for that they need to be ... punished severely. If it's not painful, they are going to repeat it again. Don't get me started. Anyway - I've written to all the reps to oppose these bills. Everyone else in PA must do the same or don't come crying when they take away yet another of your rights.

even though this probably has no chance I've put in my 2 pennies to the whole lot of them.

my letter (albeit e-mail) reads:

I have been informed by like minded individuals that there will be several house bill measures that Governor Rendell is attempting to push out of committee on Tuesday November 20, 2007; HB 18, HB 22 and HB 29. These anti gun laws are not only pointless and unconstitutional, but just another example of anti crime legislation that will do absolutely nothing to solve the real problems of crime namely drug use and poverty.

I strongly believe that these laws will do nothing to stop crime and will only put further restrictions on the law abiding and voting public. Do not let these “feel good” laws get out of committee; they make a mockery of our commonwealth.

Please vote against HB 18, 22 and 29.

if you live in PA Stand up and be heard!

Thats no excuse to take action. You can't let them have any room or else that small amount of room will continue to expand until we become New Jersey.

Don't get me wrong. My state Rep and Senator know exactly how I feel about any sort of gun control legislation.

As far as sending to other reps, its a waste of time. If letters or emails come in from non-constituents, they very quickly wind up in the circular file.

we need to watch closely, in our own states, to see who is introducing these gun control bills. Thats where the "career suicide" should start. Write just one bill...vote them OUT. Don't let the bums hang around.

Mark.

I wouldn't say it's a waste of time. It certainly isn't as productive as contacting your own rep. But at least it gives them a sense of the popular opinion of PA, and could help sway or maintain their opinion.

At the very least it doesn't hurt, and it CAN be productive.

As I thought, none of the bills made it out of committee, despite (of because of) a 40 minute speech by Rendell to the Judiciary committee.

Chalk up another one in the Win column for common sense gun rights.

Have a nice Thanksgiving, Ed! :neener:

House Bill 22, "one-gun-a-month" legislation, sponsored by State Representative John Myers (D-Philadelphia), will prohibit law-abiding citizens from purchasing more than one handgun at a time, and impose a 30-day waiting period between single handgun purchases.

Gang-bangers and other such thugs may buy as many and as often as they like, however...

One passed and the others were closer than I liked. It will require CONSTANT vigilance on our part.

The one that passed enhances penalties for attempting to or actually injuring/killing an LEO.

20 years mandatory for shooting at an LEO.

Those are the kinds of legislation that should pass; Ones that actually goes after criminals. Once the gangstas learn that they'll do 20 years, no pleas, no good behavior, no commutated sentences, but 20 years, maybe the'll think twice about pulling the trigger at a cop.

With all due respect, that's complete nonsense.

Anyone who is not deterred by the death penalty or life imprisonment is not likely to be swayed by facing a 20 year sentence. In fact what this kind of legislation encourages is more determination. If a "gangsta" misses or wounds the cop, gets caught, and is tried and convicted he gets 20 years. But if he kills the cop and doesn't get caught because he has removed an effective witness against him he goes free.

The only way this kind of legislation could do more good than harm is if the "gangsta" sees the uniform, says "Curses, foiled again," throws down his weapon, and declares "All right, copper, you have caught me dead to rights. I shall not risk a 20 year term. Take me away. All I ask is that you feed my puppy whilst I am incarcerated."

I saw something like that in the movies a long time ago. So, I surmise, did the moronic legislators who perpetrate these frauds upon a witless public.

Apparently the Chief Gangster is getting so many phone calls, that his office is using an automated voice attendant, 'Press one if your call is concerning gun control' (717) 787-2500.

I called and asked if the following quotes were made by "Sunshine Patriots"

“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” - Thomas Jefferson

"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned." Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Article I, Section 21

and asked his office to call me back if they had questions
