A police officer and a suspect were wounded in a shootout on a residential street in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.

Officer Joseph D. Goody of the Mount Joy Borough Police was shot in the right hand in an exchange of gunfire before shooting the suspect, Thomas Edward Beck, in the lower torso, police said.

Both men were hospitalized after the shootout at 12:40 a.m. yesterday, but neither wound was considered life-threatening, police said.

Investigators said Beck, 38, shot first. Beck's estranged wife, 45-year-old Cindy L. Beck, said her husband was upset at the prospect of paying child support for their two daughters.

The couple separated in July. "He works himself up into such a frenzy," she said.

Two officers were dispatched to Beck's Mount Joy home after a neighbor complained of a disturbance.

They said Beck opened fire from a porch with a 9 mm handgun, hitting Goody and nearly missing Officer Jose Ortiz.

Beck stopped firing after he was shot, police said, and was handcuffed.

"He had no regard for the lives of those officers," Mount Joy Borough Police Chief John B. Sweigart said. "He showed no fear during the encounter."

Goody was expected to remain at Lancaster General Hospital for several days for hand and arm surgeries, Sweigart said. Beck was under guard at the same hospital.

Police said Beck had been alone in the house. The officers had knocked on the front door and were walking toward a side entrance when the shooting started, police said.
