I was going to pick up some pepper spray for the girls in my family as a small item to put in their holiday stocking and my wife said PEPPER SPRAY DONT WORK DUMMIE!! There has to be some type of strong pepper spray out there..What do ya'll think??

I believe the U.C. Davis police department can make some recommendations on this.

Well, in some ways she is right! Pepper Spray is not as effective as a CCW handgun. I have been looking into the Kimber two shot pepper Gun. You can watch some youtube videos of how the Kimber product works.

First Choice - CCW
Second Choice - Personal Taser
Third Choice - Some form of Pepper spray

Additional personal carry protection. I have always been a fan of Kubaton key chains if they are legal in your state.... They are basically a steel rod with a pointed end, some have two small spikes that make punching and striking much more damaging in personal defense. They are also nice because they can easily be carried in a clenched fist while walking to a car if there is any threat, or just plain nervous about your situation. good stocking stuffer...

And you might ask the wife if she'd be willing to take a small shot of it since it doesn't work.

Here's a couple of reviews:

I like your syle meef.. I hope she will let me try that on her:evil:

Pepper spray... I will work over time if you get enough in there. You just can't keep your eyes open or breathe too well (at least with the stuff mixed with tear gas). I think tear gas works better, but it has the same effect. Eventually your eyes and throat swell up and you can't carry on the attack nearly as efficiently. But someone who has been exposed to it a few times can take it better. Even those Davis students stayed put after being sprayed. It isn't magic, but as they say, "better than nothing".

As a side, in basic training, we took off our gas masks in the gas chamber. Man was that funny, I went through kind of early so I could chill and enjoy the show. Snot boogers three feet long! Eyes RED! We were told we'd get a weekend off if anyone could say the "Infantryman's Creed" after taking off the mask. Nobody did it, and believe me, I tried real hard.

The Kimber tool looks nice, but I'd want to test it out, and with goggles on to see if it really has the velocity to go around them. Anything non lethal you plan on carrying, you should try it on yourself, if for nothing less than to know what to expect when you use it --not all of it goes downrange and only on the bad guy, you might get choked up too.

You may have to convince your wife that she can spray you too... I know mine wouldn't be too cool with it, but it sure would be funny! A fun prank I did as a kid was to spray it in window fans in the summer... Our buddies inside choked, sniffled, sat there... Then PANDEMONIUM! I don't advise this in today's nanny state, but if you do, make sure they don't get hurt running out.

She's wrong, at least most of the time.

Some of the time you'll use good pepper spray and the attacker is drugged or otherwise chemically "enhanced" to the point that it isn't very effective.

BUT what does she suggest as an alternative, brutal taunting, cooperation with the rapist, begging?

If she isn't going to carry a gun the pepper spray provides an option that NOT carrying it won't.

Just be sure to get good spray instead of something cheap of the grocery store rack.

Hmmmm?
Pepper spray in the old stockings huh?

I'd suggest you don't spike the eggnog and get aunt Clary drunk again.

And make sure they all understand they are not breath freshener spray for kissing under the mistletoe!

I did it a couple years back and it was warmly received...

Most women won't carry a pistol, but have no problem with pepper spray. I sleep a little better knowing they at least have that.

I carried Freeze +P when I worked at the prison. Works great. It's a mix of OC and CS. Also standard issue for most LE around here. I have a can in my pocket at work right now.

Strongly recommend Spitfire brand because they're way more likely to actually be carried (keychain model with no sheath necessary) and easier to deploy intuitively (point horizontally and press down and out) and therefore MUCH more likely to be used than conventional delivery system models.

Also it gives you good stocking-stuffers for the future: they offer a refill cartridge that's pretty cheap, and it's good to replace it yearly.

There is pepper spray and there is pepper spray. There is Level 1, 2 and 3 hotness. 3 is the hottest commonly available for use on people. (Not all manufacturers use this rating system.)

Sabre Red is Level 3 and good pungent stuff. I don't see any of the weaker sprays as being sensible for the private citizen. Cops may want to use the weaker stuff for quicker recovery time by the suspect, but they have all sorts of other force options available.

@ Kendal Black: I sprayed a guy with Sabre Red & it didn't even phase him. I had to beat the crap outta him to get him to stop.

I was thinking about doing the same thing. As to it not working, I believe that in most situations where it does not work is in law enforcement. The difference between law enforcement and civilian use is LEOs are using it to subdue and then arrest a person, a civilian is using it to simply get away from a person. So it doesn't necessarily need to incapacitate someone, just slow them down enough for your wife to get to safety.

There appears to be a small percentage of the population who are not much affected by pepper spray. In any case, it is not a magic weapon. Just about anyone can still fight to an extent after being tagged. It's one of the training exercises, some places.

About all you can expect is to make the sprayee less adept at fighting, or resisting arrest, or pursuing. The scenario where the person is sprayed, drops to the ground and rolls up in the fetal position is rare, and possibly mere legend.
