percussion cap shortage? or overpriced?

Unfortunately that's overpriced but the going rate. The local Bass Pro has them for $8/100, just verified that today, but with sales tax they're almost $9 out the door. And they only had six tins, and only one size.

A friend called me yesterday said he was stopping at Gander Mountain, did I need anything. I said "#10 Remington caps". They finely had some, but that was the only ones they had.
There is a local gun shop that won't have anything with the mane Remington on it, he has CCI, but most of my guns like Remington 10s.

I pick up the last CCI #11 at local gun shop at $9.95 per tin. They have plenty of #10 and Musket cap at the same price.

Part of the problem is that the plant that made caps for Navy Arms blew up a few years ago and I have not heard about it being rebuilt. CCI and RWS are the only mfg. left.

Less competition, higher price.

Remington?

If CCI and RWS are the only caps makers then who makes Remington caps??

Not sure. Have not found out. They may make their own, after all, they essentially are the same as primers for cartridge ammo. If that is the case, Remington cap shortage shortage probably related to cartridge ammo shortage as that is more profitable for Remington. I shoot mainly CW era and never saw Remington musket caps.

Cheapest Musket and pistol caps were always Navy Arms made in Brazil. RWS made in Germany. CCI(Speer I believe) US. Think Labor and regulation cost.

When the Navy plant went down (Up?), Dems controled DC. Could they have made it difficult to start re-importing caps? All I know is there was a shortage and price more than doubled for what was availabe.

Bass Pro has been sitting on that $8/tin for Remington #10's since early 2014, when I bought 10 tins. While I was at it, I softened the pain of the hazmat fee with a jug of 777. Both good choices the caps fit fine, no pinching to keep them on the factory Pietta nipples on both of the NMA's and my son's "fake Navy" .44 - and all three are printing tighter groups with Triple 7, loading 26 grains (Remingtons) and 21 grains for the "fake".

Anybody in the extreme SW corner of Arizona want some left-over Remington #11's and an unopened pound of Pyrodex? Willing to deal.
