I just bought a new Ruger Hawkeye in 7mm-08 and will reload it as soon as my dies come in.I load several rifle and handgun calibers but would like someone"s pet load for the 7-08.
Thanks

Plan on working up loads with RL-15 & W748
These are medium speed powders. But, IMO, still too fast for best results in the 7-08. The powder sweet spot with 120 gr bullets is in the range of RL17 and H414. With a heavier 140 gr & 160 gr bullets the sweet spot shifts even slower - in the range of 4350 and N150. If you're looking for advice, my recommendation is: try some slower powders.

Mine enjoys IMR4007 with 120-140 gr bullets. At 140 gr R19 seems to take over with the heavier wgts and Varget or IMR4350 is a good all around choice in my limited experiance.
I`ve never tried R15 but hear very good things about it too.

my 7-08 loved formed brass, 748, & 139 hornadys , never got to try h414 in it, feller watched me shoot it & bought it from me .

mine was a heavy barreled 700.

I use IMR-4895 with either 139 or 140 gr psp for my son's 7mm-08, I won't give the powder charge, but it is a couple grains lower than max. He likes them.

My son's been using 44g of Varget over a Sierra 120g Pro Hunter and CCI primer with very good results.:D

He took this buck at 240 yards. You don't need sub MOA for deer hunting but that's what this load will do consistently.
For 139/140g bullets I've had success with around 50g of RL 19.

I have two pet loads for my son's Savage 7MM-08.
140gr Partition with 47.5gr Ramshot BigGame. Outstanding accuracy and velocity.

160gr Partition with 48gr Ramshot Hunter. Again, outstanding accuracy and velocities running just over 2700fps. That's darn near 280 performance in a 7MM-08.

Try these:
1. 139gr Hornady BTSP; 44.0gr of BLC2(Win748), Fed210 primer @ 2.810"oal
2. Same as above except 46.5gr IMR4350 or 43.0gr of RL15
3. Substitute 140gr Nosler or Sierra for either above.
4. 150gr Win PP, or Remington C-L, or Nosler part. or BallisticTip, 45.0gr of IMR4350.
5. Substitute Above#4 with 41.5gr of RL15.

RL19 was accurate but two lot#s I tried were very much slower than book listed loads. (like 150-200fps)
My gun dosen't like H414, H380, Varget, IMR4064, H4895 or 120gr Bullets. Haven't tried RL17 or IMR4007 yet.

I have a couple of pet 7mm08 loads. However my rifle has a really short barrel so it is better with fast powder and lighter bullets. sierra pro hunter 120gr and 45 gr imr 4895 or viht N 140. Speer 130 gr hot cor and 42 gr N 140. The 130 is a quite soft shooting but very accurate load. All of the loads are tried and tested on game. All have taken deer. The 7mm08 is a great round. Good choice.

Ackley (interlock)

I have experimented with many components and all are safe in my BOSS equipped Browning. All use R-P Brass. I love this cartridge!

a) 140 Sierra Spit/ 42.0 W748/ Rem 9.5/ Result 3/.27"
b) 130 Barnes XBT/ 48.0 H414/ Rem 9.5/ Result 3/.70"
c) 130 Barnes XBT/ 41.0 IMR 4064/ GM210 Match/ Result 3/.62"
d) 140 Barnes XBT/ 40.0 IMR 4064/ Rem 9.5 / Result 3/.54"
e) 145 Speer BT/ 42.0 IMR 4064/ REm 9.5/ Result 20 in 2.0" (yes 20)
f) 140 Barnes XBT/ 42.0 Varget/ Rem 9.5/ Result 3/.23"

Good luck with the '08. You will love it. Soft on recoil, hard hitting and accurate.
