Has any one ever pheasant hunted in S. Dakota? Is it any good? I seen advertisments on the outdoor channel for some hunts up there and they say you can hunt till 31Mar, is that how long the season is there? Here in Utah its only 3 weeks for state wide and 4 1/2 weeks for southern regions. But they also advertise hunts that go until spring, can outfitters take you out longer, I dont understand, the Utah wildlife depertmant didnt get my question they just kept sayin 18Nov and 03Dec.

I just got back from pheasant hunting in SD and yes, it's great. I know the season is quite long but don't know exactly how long. When I was there the first part of this month, the weather was fairly pleasant but I heart that later in the season it can be brutally cold.

Some outfitters host hunts on private game ranches. Since they own the land and stock the pheasants, they have a special deal and can run the season a lot longer. Here in Michigan, they go from September to April with their hunts. $$ up front to hunt, $$ for a guide with dog, and then $$ per bird shot. Not a poor old retired fixed income type guys (me) sport -- at least not more than once a year. Hunts are typically 4 hours long. The guide with the dog will make sure you get plenty of birds in the air during that time.

Close to SD...

My family has some land about 6 miles east of the SD/MN border. The pheasant hunting has been excellent so far. Been out for my first two times ever this year, and the experienced hunter keeps telling me I'll be spoiled.

If you walk for an hour and don't see a pheasant flush somewhere, it's a bad hour. They should be more common the further you go west from there (i.e. SD)

My only problem is that I can't shoot straight, and when I do, can't find the bird :(

The MN season goes until the end of 2007. Don't know SD's.

I have a doctor friend who practices in South Dakota. He says the pheasant hunting is awesome. He's always after me to go there and hunt. I probably should.

depends on where in s.d. you go. the pheasants can be great, or nonexistant.

as for the season, it runs from october thru 31 december, unless you are hunting 'tame' birds, in which case it goes until march.

i like late season hunting better, especially if its cold and snow on the ground. doesn't get any better.

also know that pen-raised birds aren't the same as wild birds.

YYYEEESSSS! pheasant hunting in SD is the best, but parts of nebraska and western/central kansas also are starting to produce huge numbers. 8 of us went in central ks two weeks ago and we got 64 pheasant and 4 quail. (if i could figure out how to get the pic from my phone to the computer, id post it)
