By PATRICK WALTERS
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A police officer who confronted at least two suspected bank robbers was shot and killed Saturday, leading to a manhunt during which an officer fatally shot one suspect, authorities said.

Investigators released few details about the shootings as police searched a wooded area for another suspect involved in the robbery at a bank in a grocery store.

Sgt. Steven Liczbinski, 40, a 12-year veteran who had recently been promoted, was shot with an assault weapon not far from the bank.

"It is my understanding that he was either in the car or had just gotten out of the car at the time he was struck," Police Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey said at a news conference outside Temple University Hospital.

The suspects fled but were later spotted by another officer, who shot and killed one, police said. Ramsey did not confirm how many people were involved in the robbery or how many were sought.

Police originally described a man and a woman in Muslim-type clothing and a man wearing a white hospital mask. The masked man had shoulder-length dreadlocks, but Officer Tanya Little said that could have been a wig.

Ramsey said one of those suspects had been killed, but he did not know which one.

Liczbinski's killing comes only a few days after Ramsey announced a major reorganization of the police department's command structure and the addition of nearly 250 officers on street patrols as part of a strategy to reduce crime.

Liczbinski was married with two sons and a daughter.

"This loss of life from a fine Philadelphia police officer is just one more example of the senseless violence that takes place here in our city," Mayor Michael Nutter said

I may be a trifle puzzled...

Is this the internet forum where one is supposed to post stuff about how good-guys get shot, people do stupid things with guns, and generally crow about anything that helps the Brady folks?

Did someone say brady folks, oh look here

ASSAULT WEAPONS
Are there limitations on assault weapons? No

Pennsylvania - No state restriction on the sale or possession of military-style semiautomatic assault weapons. Assault weapons are as easy to buy as hunting rifles. Congress and President Bush allowed the federal assault weapons ban to sunset in 2004. See also: Large Capacity Ammunition Magazines

Please refrain from blasting me for quoting the brady bunch (see above),
please realize this information is from them, not Pennsylvania.

From the input provided above, it appears to me that the State of PA
may not be providing a definition of "assault weapon" from which those
antis are basing their info. Correct me if I am wrong, but PA is a "select fire state" (treasury department/tax stamps respected). Perhaps as a matter
about correcting the media of their misdefined terminology, maybe PA could
officially meet with Websters Dictionary and set precedent...
Assault weapon - Preposition/Noun - A hand and or shoulder fired firearm which is small enough to be carried and operated by a single user and has the DISTINCT property of selective rate of fire capabilities, this type of weapon is strictly regulated by the BATFE and is rarely used in streetcrimes
because of its high collector value.

Compare what I've just entered here, versus debate over 9mm vs. .45cal.
Which issue is more important to me?
Abuse to 2A by the media and socialism seems to run hand in hand.

I guess an assault weapon is any weapon used in an assault. I don't know what to think. It's a bad term that has no meaning nowadays.

Picard, Sir,
I guess an assault weapon is any weapon used in an assault. I don't know what to think. It's a bad term that has no meaning nowadays.

I strongly disagree with that statement.
I will not permit antis to falsely define terminology which may be used against us gunnies.

My dog is barking, should I grab my assault shovel (never heard of that)
or my assault paintball gun (it is select fire).

If "we" give in to such false terminology (thusly allowing time to accept a falsehood as fact), there may be a day (long aways) where the antis may call your great great grandsons shovel an "assault shovel".
I don't like the possibility of that.
Give anti gun people an inch, they'll take a mile.
Would that be ok with you?

Picard, I may not agree with your viewpoint, nor do I understand it,
but it is your point of view, which you are entitled to.

p2000sk - where in his reply did he seem to support that false terminology? If anything, he seemed to express disgust with it.

Did you think that "Make it so..." was part of his message?
