I saw Hiroshima shortly after the 'big bang' but most of the damage from conventional bombing in the neighboring cities had been cleaned up. When I saw the movie "Enemy at the Gates" I wasn't completely convinced the damage depicted was as severe as shown. These pictures show me that the damage WAS massive and probably worse than the movie suggested.

That the Russian people were able to recover from such devastation is a testament to their spirit and toughness.

‘Least we forget’ … amazing photos – thanks

My favourite photo is the burning Messerschmitt ME109 – it’s good to fight back,

This was my fav photo as well, the phrase "you just had to be there" was rarely more true.

That Mongolian with the PPD looks fairly happy, but the picture appears to have been taken in warm weather, after the siege was over. I'm translating a book on Soviet arms and ammo right now, and it says that the Tokarev pistol (the TT33) was originally adopted, but was recommended to be scrapped because it wasn't able to shoot through the vision slits on tanks and armoured cars; they held a second series of firing tests, which was won by a designer/pistol called Voevodin, but the war started before they could be put into production, so they had to stick with the Tokarev.

Now, let's see...

According to wikipedia, the Battle of Stalingrad lasted 200 days and about 1.5 million were killed, which comes to 7,500 killed per day on average.

Total, that's about three times the total deaths suffered by the United States during the entire duration of the war, or approximately equal to the total death suffered by the UK, US, Italy during the entire war.

I would do a similar crunch for Leningrad, but nobody's really got a good idea of how many people died in that.

My favorite was the machine shop.

Spoke reams about what sheer guts the Russians had.

The PPsH lives on!!

Oops. Not a PPsH... I thought I had a shot of one someplace...
