I've got a question for you. I notice the the steel near the front strap is rounded out all the way to the grip panel, which is like the originals, and like my Colt WWII Repro, but when you go to the Springfield site, the one they have illustrated has it more like their standard guns, i.e., there is a wide flat surface exposed between the forward part of the grip panel and the front strap. What gives? Have they recently improved the model, but haven't bothered to update their illustration on their web site? Anyway, I am real impressed with it, and I like the new grips that come with it. No need to change them.

Real hawkeye: Yep, their webpage is just out of date. I think they are compleatly dropping the blocky frontstrap in favor of the original colt style. All current springfields I have seen are now with the traditional frontstrap, rounded to the edge of the grips.

ajacobs, that's a good thing. I have one of the first run of "loaded" models in stainless (when the front sight was not dovetailed in), and this is the one feature that I don't like about it, i.e., the blocky front strap. Glad to hear they are moving away from that. Might actually pick one of these GI guns up. Sounds like an unbeatable deal.

rblack, how are the edges, sharp or smooth? My Colt Repro has very sharp edges (left as perfect 90 degree angles) which should have been beveled down and rounded out. Does Springfield leave edges and corners sharp or do they smooth them out a little? Thanks.

The Real Hawkeye, The edges of my WWII are smoother than any of my Colts. They are in no way what I call beveled, but not near so sharp as the colts.

I like the grips! I wouldn't really give a flying fig if they looked authentic or not. I've been thinking about getting one of these to just shoot for a while, and then slowly buy a few custom parts for. Just what I need... another project gun!

New Grip Panels

I like'em better than the plastic grips...mainly because I never cared for the
plastic grips, even on a real GI pistol. They still don't look "right", though.

Springfield's grips would have been MUCH better-looking if they had
made the US about half the size that it is and framed it in a diamond instead of the square block. I gotta wonder who's callin' the shots on
designs... Probably the same guys who called for the front cocking grooves/serrations on some otherwise beautiful pistols.

Welp...That there's my nickel's worth. Sic, suum cuique.
