FNAR mags and 1/4 MOA - Ha!

Greg,

The best I know so far for FNAR mags is Gary Lovetro at Arizona Gun Runners. The page to order them is:
http://www.arizonagunrunners.net/Products/FNMfng/fnmfng.html

The mags you are asking about are identified on that page as:
P/N 3108929210 20-round magazine, Detachable Box Mag
P/N 3108929200 10-round magazine, Detachable Box Mag

The price is $43.75 each for either.

Leadhead,
If I cast the gun in a one-ton block of concrete, I might get 1/4 MOA! Might not be anywhere near the bullseye, though. Yep, I'll have fun tryin' anyway....

What I was trying to say Bill is...don't worry about checking the torque values on your rings.....just snug them up by hand and shoot!

I don't think you will see any difference.....

Yeh, Millet calls for 50-60 inch-lbs torque on the clamp-to-rail bolts for one reason: not to slip under recoil, they say. Anyone with decent mechanical feel can repeat that kind of tightness by hand.

I thought the reason for a torque tool was that the rings distorted when you tightened the rail-clamp bolts, and you wanted to repeat the exact same distortion each time, hence the torque tool. But looking at the Burris Tactical rings in my hand and the Millet Tacticals in the picture, these things are pretty beefy and the rail clamp motion is a straight pull. You'd have to twist some real GFPs (Gorilla Foot Pounds) before these tactical rings would distort at all.

So I will tighten by hand. I may "calibrate" my mechanical feel to 50 in-lbs, since we do have torque wrenches in the lab/shop where I work.

Ohhh, I might have found what LaRue Tactical has for this need...

briansmithwins,

It looks like you may have had in mind a quick detach (QD) scope mount from LaRue like the:
LaRue Tactical SPR / M4 Scope Mount QD LT-104
at, for ex., http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=30
Here's my first attempt at providing a photo (maybe just an attachment at end of this message).

It sells for $195 including the pair of 1", 30 mm or 34 mm rings. I guess that's not so bad when each tactical ring alone would be ~ $30.

I think it would mount the Millet DMS-1 scope I bought, if the spacing between the rings on this mount is OK for the scope's turret cluster - the spacing seems to be fixed.

Yep, that's what I was thinking of.

Just call Larue and ask what the spacing is. If you get it and it doesn't work Larue has great customer service and return policy.

Would this work for You

i just bought the same gun, and i find myself in the same predicament......need iron sights just in case...

Right now i'm considering a clamping system.....to have the barrel tapped and have custom front sight base ....holy @#$@# expensive
after buying this gun....funds are a short!!! yes i know i messed up in not having enough money for optics/sights.....but my thinking is buy the gun now...and not worry too much on any new regulations the Democrats will enact, i'll be grandfathered in.

or

opticsplanet_2040_3064839553

MVA-24453: Morovision MIL-SPEC-1913 Barrel Clamp Rail Mount, Long (3.36 in.). For .75 in. to 1 in. Diameter Barrels

or this:

:)

then you can put some sights......haven't tried it yet.....hoping someone else would.....local gun stores....no help
i'm not sure of the fit on the Heavy Fluted Barrel.....and i'm not willing to just give it a try....if anyone knows please post its fit to fn ar 308 heavy.

i was also thinking just get a rail extender then get a bridge to lock down the extend rail so that it is level and sturdy with original rail....and just mount the front sight
YHM-227A.gif

or
YHM-226.gif

I would then add some see through scope mounts

49513.jpg

and add some very low backup iron sights BUIS

such as:

Centurion%20Diopter%20C4%20Iron%20Set-2T.jpg

Centurion Diopter C4 Iron Sights Set (Front & Rear)

**looks low enough or something else

or this (**the low weaver backup)

rifle-gr-backup.jpg

BACKUP GHOST-RING SIGHTS FOR SCOPE BASES
Offers versatility in dealing with changing hunting conditions or the emergency of a damaged scope. Mounts to the scope base and retains zero when reinstalled in the field. Windage and elevation adjustable. Supplied with .230" and .191" I.D apertures.

it looks as if you can replace the ghost ring with a front sight.....you would have to buy 2 sets then replace the ghost ring with a true front sight.

then i would add some nice Leupold optics

****FY......why do this....when you hunt deer, sometimes those stealthy bastards sneak up on you.....especially when your sleeping :p
Need quick acquisition and a rifle sighted for 100 yards or more, you'll miss up close

Thanks to Odin_Fury for his info on the clamp style front sight mount and thanks to Bill_Rights for posting this subject. My own internet search for iron sight options for the FNAR led me here. My immediate thought on the subject before seeing the clamp option was to drill and tap the front and install a fold down BUIS system. Bill_Rights did I just see you over at the FN forums? =) By the way guys and gals, heya, long time lurker-first time poster here.

I've only skimmed this thread, but LaRue mounts return to zero, typically within about 0.5 MOA or better in my experience.

For several years I would switch between an EOTech and TA11 ACOG, both in LaRue mounts, depending on what the stages were at 3-Gun matches.

CalvusAquila,

Yes, I am the Bill_Rights from FNForum, the same, in the very flesh (well, in the disturbance of electrons and phosphor dots we call a computer display). ;)

I hope to get back to this subject seriously in a while - I've got my hands full with what I've got, not to mention the life-stuff that keeps me from getting to that!

Duelist,

Referring to the Burris combo 1-4 x scope with attached red-dot holo sight, as long as you're going to have the red-dot for close-in work, wouldn't you want a higher mag scope, like maybe 3-10 x ? I have the Millett DMS-1 1-4 x 24mm and find that I am always on 4 x except for rapid fire exercises, which so far are close in, for me.

Odinfury,

I still owe your proposed hardware a close study, like I said. However, I am thinking (maybe dreaming) of a front sight somehow mounted off either the left or right front-stock Picatinny rail. 'Course, it'd look weird, with some kind of "arm" to shove the front sight out near the muzzle. But at least we wouldn't have to drill-and-tap or clamp to the barrel. I imagine that there would still have to be some minimal-strength centering rest for the body of the front sight at the end of the arm. Still envisioning....

Larue only way to go. Your going to pay for the precision. If you cheap out on this your performance with suffer accordingly. If your serious...go with Laure or don't waste your money brother.

but my thinking is buy the gun now...and not worry too much on any new regulations the Democrats will enact, i'll be grandfathered in.

Wow I am surprised people are still thinking this way. Relax you've got time there is not going to be a ban anytime soon.

I am not sure why anyone would go through the trouble and expense of adding a BUIS to an FNAR. It is a precision target rifle not a battle rifle. There are quite a few battle rifles with iron sights you can mount a scope on easily. Unless someone comes out with a affordable alternative (doubtful) you are best putting the money into a good optic.

multiple functions

I like options.....and i'm not rich. I only have 3 guns. Sig p220 handgun, 870 remington, and the newly acquired FNAR 308. All my guns have multiple roles. From carry, home defense, duck hunting, deer hunting, etc. If i can have my FNAR play not only as a long range deer gun but up close home defense (not the best option mind you) but why the heck not. OPTIONS!!!! I luv options. :)

I just put a little puny sightmark laser dual shot holograpic (Gimmicky word) reflex sight.

It will provide me with good view of the 870's front bead sight, have a dot to put on bad guy and even a little dot in the window to aim through.

I see one of the posters had a weaver ghost ring sight mount that could go onto my rail in front of the sightmark so that it can become a backup in case the fancy sight gets busted.

Im cheap I know, cannot bring myself to spend more than 120 on a sight. Alot of nicer sights in the 500 dollar range.. whew.

Wish me luck.

Question for Seagull ?

Seagull,

Have you put this Yukon SM13002 on your FNAR?

Back up a minute. Is this the sight you're talking about?
Yukon_SM13002_opticsplanet_2043_653.gif

The write-up at the OpticsPlanet web site says it has a Weaver mount:
http://www.opticsplanet.net/yukon-sightmark-reflex-sight-sm13002.html
Does that work on the FNAR's Picatinny rail? Seems like, at least, it might be offset left or right a hair on the P-rail. Isn't the P-rail a little wider than the Weaver rail?

Anyway, OpticsPlanet has 'em on sale for $80 now. I might buy one anyway - it'll fit on my wife's target pistol W-rail, if nothing else. Let me guess: Made in China, right?

Yes that looks like the unit. I dont know what FNAR means but It went onto the weaver rail on my 870 and clamped on good. It is off just a hair but at the HD ranges we expect to fight in it wont matter.

As long as that glass withstands the shocks we're happy. Im actually thinking of getting one for the wife's Moss, if only to make things even more simple than the current frankenrig on her now.

We are prepared to go even higher in the reflex sight category as far as quality and cost but, we consider this a entry level keeping things simple.

We did send in the warrantry and kept the paper work on it. I wont be surprised if we have to get it replace.

I try anything once usually :D

Upon further reflection, the reflex window makes my view of the world around the shotgun's front Bead something so worth shooting on. Previously I had to sort of make intimate with the buttstock which makes for teeth rattle on firing. Now with this sight, it's not so bad.

Ive yet to fire the damn thing, I hope to do so next week.

At first the FNAR was my only .308 semi so I wanted BUIS. Now that I have a 16" .308 semi it has BUIS and will soon have a Bushnell red dot. FNAR has Millet DMS.
