I am trying to find an AR-15 with a 18" bull barrel that has both adjustable iron sights (no carry handle) and a rail for adding a scope -- is this out there somewhere? I'd like to be able to easily take the scope off in the field, and use iron sights, and then pop the scope back on without losing my zero. Is there a rifle that would enable me to do this?

Everything I've found so far has either the carry handle/iron sights or a rail, but I haven't found any that have both ...

Thanks,

You can buy a flat top configuration with either a flip up front sight, or a plain railed gas block (to which you can add a front sight). For a rear sight there are literally dozens to chose from.

As far as throwing the optic off and on without having to rezero your choices aren't so much about the rifle or the optic, but the mount itself. One of the most popular (that claims to hold zero) is the lever mount(s) from LaRue Tactical.

As far as the baseline AR goes - look at the Colt 6940

Thanks huckster -- the term "flip-up sights" is what I needed. And thanks also for pointing me to the Larue mount -- it looks great. The Colt AR you suggested is a bit out of my price range :) but I should be able to find what I need now. I'm seeing if Oly Arms can add flip ups on their K16 rifle ... we'll see how that goes

LaRue probably makes the only return to zero mounts worth a damn.

OK -- I've decided on the Oly Arms K16 with MASS detachable flip up sites -- $975. Seems pretty accurate for such a cheap gun: http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=325659&highlight=k16

I am going to get the LaRue Tactical mount, since everyone has such good things to say about it.

Now my next question is -- which scope to go with it?

I don't want to spend over $500 dollars on the scope, and would ideally like to be right around the $350 dollar range ... I want something with a warranty, which will last me many years or a lifetime .

I don't plan on shooting anything past 600 yards, and I want a Mil-Dot reticle.

One of my primary concerns is durability. My "rifle range" is a huge clearcut in the national forest behind my house, and I have to hike a half mile or so out there over fallen trees and boulders ... I don't want the zero getting thrown off by a little bit of a rough walk. I'd also like something that will hold its zero when it gets taken on and off, with the LaRue mount.

I also want it to be adjustable without tools -- ideally something where I can just "turn a knob" to adjust the zoom/focus.

What would you all recommend here?

Here's my setup:

It is a Smith and Wesson M&P 15T, with an Eotech 512 mounted on it. The iron sights are the troy flip-up battle sights. They'll easily cowitness with the Eotech if you would like, but I typically leave mine flipped down and use the Eotech.

Pretty sure A.R.M.S. Inc. would argue the point!

They invented them!
And the reason LaRue became so successful is that they "fixed" the systematic problems with the ARMS mounts. Everyone I know who used to use ARMS mounts now uses LaRue mounts.
