I have always had a weakness for 22 rifles. Back in my younger days I didn't have a lot of extra spending money. I would look around and find a low priced 22 rifle at a pawn shop and clean it up. I found that if you know what your looking for, you can really pick up some sweet deals.

I do have a little extra spending money these days but I still love to hunt for those low priced 22's that need a little work.

Here's I spotted, a little Savage Mark II bolt action, at a pawn shop. It had a lot of surface rust on it and the plastic stock was scratched up. Other then that the rifle was in great shape.

The shop had it priced at $79 and I knew that a new one, at the time, ran from $169 to $189. So I offered the guy $70 out the door and he said yes.

Here it is just as I bought it.

Then after a little clean up.

I then preped the metal and stock and sprayed them with Aluma-Hyde II, Matt Black. I allowed it to dry for 6 days and put it together. Not bad for a $70 rifle. :D

Savage Mk II, great little rifle gunny. Great job there, mine has a little 4 power scope on it.

Great job on the savage, I love those things.

I do that same thing all the time. My drug of choice is the Mossberg 500, or subsequent store brands (new haven 600at, etc.). I can pick those things up in fine mechanical condition for $100 - $150. Take some steel wool and gun oil to it, maybe refinish or replace the stock, and I come out with a $250 shotgun. In a pinch I'll durabake the whole thing black. I've done this same thing no less than a dozen times, an always either gift it to my friends, or sell it at a hefty profit (after extensive use of course) :)

This little rifle was a great shooter, but I got rid of it just over a year ago. A few days before Christmas of 2010 we had a little family get together at my house. My 10 year old nephew was telling me that if he got money for Christmas, he was going to buy a 22 rifle. I asked him what kind of 22 rifle he wanted. He said a bolt action with a black stock and a clip. I opened op the gun safe and pulled the savage out. He said that that was the type of rifle he was going to get. I handed him the rifle and told him it was his. His eyes got big and his smile got bigger. He then ran to the next room with the rifle to show it to his dad.
I made sure that he he had ammo and a gun case befoer he went home that day.

Savage MKII 22

Great looking job on the Savage. I am 76 years old and still make Pawn Shops for bargains. With the help of the internet, I can disassemble most firearms. It really is fun to take a firearm that looks "old and very used and abused" and make it look almost new. I also like 22 rifles and shotguns. tspence
