Picked up a Model 620 and have some questions.

Hi guys,

I just picked up a Stevens Savage Model 620. I have also read about Stevens Browning Model 620s.

(Lee, it's the one you answered a question about. The receiver and they did a nice job on it, but still. Everything else has original finish, which has worn uniformly and looks very nice. I'll post pics if you want to see it).

Are there any more variations of these other than the riot or military versions? I'm curious about the "civilian" versions, I guess you'd call them.

Are the Stevens/Savage and the Stevens/Browning different in some physical way or just in name only?

I broke the "new" 620 down into two pieces using it's remarkably simple takedown process. Bless you, John Browning.

After the takedown I looked everywhere and I can find no serial number anywhere on this shotgun. I don't think there is one, unless it is internal.

On the receiver, just above the trigger guard, it says:

STEVENS
Savage Arms Corporation
Chicopee Falls, Mass. U.S.A.

MODEL 620


That't all there is on the receiver unless I missed something and I went over it pretty well.

On the 28" barrel it says:

PROOF TESTED 12 GAUGE

---2 3/4 INCH CHAMBER---

Near the end of the barrel, on the last segment before the ridges that fit into the receiver, is a mark that looks something an asterisk, * but a bit larger.

At the very end of the barrel, between the upper and lower ridged sections that fit into the receiver, there are a couple of lettters stamped - there is a "W" in a circle and next to it there is an "M" in a circle.

I can find no other markings.

Can anyone tell me about the model I have or simply point me to someplace on the Internet? The SAVAGE sight has nothing. I'd love to know when it was made, at least approximately.

Man, I love these older shotguns.

The Model 620 guns are very nice. The info I have is that they came in three configurations. 1) Riot Type with a 20" Cylinder bore barrel, 2) Sporting Skeet Type with 26" Improved Cylinder barrel, 3) Sporting Trap Type with a 30" Full choke barrel.

A Model 620 was also used in Military Trench Gun Type with bayonet lug and barrel shroud.

My 20ga gun has the serial number on the lower receiver tang. I have not seen one that is not serial numbered.

Found another set of markings that might help with identifying the 620:


On the underside of the receiver (stock facing away from you) where the bottom of the receiver slopes downward into the lifter(?) the are 4 small stamps/makings.

There is a "W" in a circle/- right next to it is an "M" in a circle with an asterisk type symbol just about in the circle with the "M"/ - next to the "M" there is a Q

Under these markings/stampings, there is an oval shape containing what appears to be the number "50" or perhaps "56" or even "5D"

Does anyone know what years the 620 was produced?

Basically, the 620 was produced from 1927 till 1953. The 620 is mechanically the same as the older 520 (produced 1904-1932), but the receiver was "streamlined" in accordance with the trend set by newer designs like the Winchester Model 12.

I know you're a 620 guy, so I got some pics here for you.

A guy on another forum says the "5D" inside the oval translates into 1952? Is that correct?

Do any of those other proof marks mean anything?

The guy who had this reblued the receiver. All the other metal is the way it was. I have no idea about the wood.

What do you think it's worth? I'm holdng onto this one.

The asterisk mark on the barrel is a bore mark. I can't remember what the one asterisk mark means, but three asterisks signifies a cylinder bore.

When you broke down the gun, did you look for a serial number in the action slide bar slot on the barrel head? And there might be a serial number on the rear of the receiver (requires removing the buttstock to see) or on some of the other internal parts.

I don't know enough about them to know date codes etc. And value will vary regionally as with most used guns, around here I'd be surprised to see a 620 in that condition offered for more than $200 simply because almost no one knows what they are and they're considered "just one more old pump shotgun."
