Today I got a rar 17hmr with another rifle, New in the box unfired far as I can tell. I've owned 3 of the 22lr and really like them, they shot very well. I really like the action on these, this is my first one in the magnum rimfire. This one is the synthetic stock which I like better then there wood, the wood one I was disappointed in.

I've seen some videos of the 22mags shooting good tho not many I can think of in 17. This should be a nice light varmint gun, I've been wanting a hmr. Got to see what I'll do for mounts, I don't want a big scope either so a 3-9 maybe just fine.

so anyone have the magnum version, what ammo you like. I got a box of Norma 17vmax with the gun so I'll grab some more one day.

Nice! I’ve had my eye on the ruger American rimfire line for a while. I think if I got a rimfire that wasn’t in 22lr I’d skip the .22mag and go right for the .17hmr

If you can avoid the unacceptably common extraction and case splitting problems with Ruger Americans, you'll likely be happy. I have Americans in LR, HM2 and 22 magnum and have been thinking about adding a 17HMR, but Ruger's crap quality control is keeping me from it. 17HMRs tend to be pleasantly accurate. Most of the ammo is made by CCI, even if it bears the name of another company.

You're going to like the .17 HMR. I've got a Savage 93R17 and it's a tack driver without much effort on my part. Those teeny tiny sharp little bullets are vicious little hole punchers!! I usually use the Hornady V-Max ammo with mine.
I've owned a few 17hmr before, even had a 10/22 in 17 along with a Stevens single shot. And 2 93 savages they shot good but never felt anything when shooting them. I have all my ammo to a friend a few years ago so I'll have to stock up on some, I like the 20 grainers best. Thank I'll try all I can find.

There a nice gun, I have owned 3 of the 22lrs and are only second to the cz to me. I never could find a use for the 22mag, it just didn't do much more then a 22 for me. I've have 3 of them, maybe I needed more time with them. I like the 17 got one when they came out when I was a kid.

now to find a scope for this 17, it's a lighter gun so nothing monster. I'll try a 3-9 Nikon for now.

I bought my wife one of the .22LR versions for her birthday (yesterday), but haven't gotten a scope yet. I'm figuring on one of those Leupold 4X "Rimfire" scopes when they become available again - everywhere I've looked says they should be available again somewhere around the end of this month. If they're not, I have a brand new Leupold 3-9 X40mm sitting on a shelf, but that seems like a lot of scope for such a little rifle.

I have a Nikon 3-9x40 bdc I think I'll put on it for now, one thing I've noticed with the 22lr( I've owned 3) for tight neck shooters like me to get a natural hold behind the scope offset rings belp. I've used the Nikon gunfire scopes on the ones I dad, they have a pretty short tube so that's probably why the scope was a touch to forward for me without offset rings.

I think for this I'll get a pic rail, the egw seems to be the best. And it's the only one were the slots actually go farther back last the base screws.

I wish leupold would come back out with there normal 4x again. A rimfire one would be great for a 22.

I think your wife will like the gun, all have been very good shooters and we'll made. There's a few things I do to make them better and speed up there break in.

That's good to know. Thanks!
My wife is only 5'1" with short arms to match, and every rifle or shotgun she's ever owned (with the exception of one "youth model" shotgun) she has had to have shortened. That's the main reason I bought the Ruger "American Rimfire" model with the modular stock. Once we get a scope for it, I figure my wife will be able to order some different modules to shorten the stock and raise or lower the cheekpiece herself if she wants to.
BTW, the model I bought has a camouflage synthetic stock and a ceracoated (SP?) bronze barrel with a muzzle brake. It's real cute. I'm anxious to see how it shoots.:)

The to wild model looks good, I like the bronze coating. Ya it's like $15 for the compact butt section, normal lop is about 14" . Older guns were about 13.50" think it's around 1 2" -12.50" with the compact stock. The luepolds tend to have longer tube on average from what I've used. These guns you can just about mount a scope on the barrel, no worries with the bolt hitting the scope.
