Picked up a savage 340A

I remember when one of the big box stores (early’70’s) were selling the 340 with a scope package. The scopes were Japanese “unbranded” scopes, so I suggest the mount came with the rifle. Advertised price was $69.95!
I had one circa 1981-84. It had been abused so I touched up the metal and refinished the stock. With a decent scope and handloads it approached moa accurate. I also got nearly as good as accuracy with a cast bullet. Made my first deer kill with a cast bullet with it.
Not pretty, but decent rifles. I always wanted one in .22Hornet or .222.
ya wish this was a 222 I really like them, but will have fun messing with this. I got some 22 accelerators to mess with to.

In upstate NY? I’ve lived and hunted in upstate NY. I’d peep sight that rifle in a heart beat. You loose about a half hour of shooting light in the eve compared to a scope, however, as you probably know.
Losing light was never much a problem for me, since we can't shot after legal sun down anyway.

One of those was my very first deer rifle. It was not very accurate and I only carried it on one hunt as I only had enough bucks in those days for the rifle, a box of two different brands of ammo to experiment with, and the hunt. The next year I had a different rifle. I wouldn't have taken a shot with if it weren't close but I never even saw a legal animal. It was still a good hunt as it's always been about being out in the forest. Getting a deer is just icing on the cake.

Here’s mine. It’s a Williams peep rather than a Redfield as I wrote earlier. Dockendorf rear “dial” sight and a Lyman ramp and bead front. Pretty decent but plain American Walnut. Notice no gas shield on the bolt, only on the first 2 -3 years of production.

At least no one taped it, seems most are done. Unlike most rifles it did seem to affect the price, almost seems like there worth more drilled. I don't like the height of the b-squared mount I have, even when th low rings a have to raise my head and almost my shoulder position.

I'll keep an eye out for a peep.

I used to load .30-30 150 grain Hornady spire points for a customer who has a T/C Contender in that caliber. Same load as the 150 grain round nose bullets. Devastating on whitetails, and he even shot a hog in Tennessee with one of those loads.

They show up around here off and on. The .222 get snagged quickly.

Seems as though a few nostalgic farmers around ( back door critter poppers ).

I started chucking w a triple deuce as a kid ( Rem 660 ).

Like that little round a lot.

Bolt .30-30.
See a few 788s now and then.

The .44s they think are made of gold.

It was interesting how Remington positioned the multiple locking lugs on those 788 rifles on the back end of the bolt. Some say that it contributed to better accuracy.
You are right, in that some sellers think those 788 rifles are sorta "precious " when you see how much they ask for those. Yet, they get scarfed up pretty dang quick when found.

Do it. A 7-30 waters in a bolt gun would be awesome. And Ackley treatment to the 30-30 barrel.
I'll make up a dummy round to see how it feels, at least it will be reversible if I get a barrel made. With are lathe would cut thread about any barrel can be turned down for the small thread size on these.

These aren't the strongest action but the limits aren't to high on the 30-30 case anyway.

I gave away all my 7-30 brass, but I've still got dies if you want em.

I can see it now, I'll have to sell a gun to pay for it lol. The receiver is drilled and taped so not like it's a collectible. The 7-30 waters would make a fine deer rifle. Been years since my dad had one. Wonder what a 120 would get up to.

I need to do some pricing. Should be cheap only just need the barrel.

I could send you a few 120's once I get them. Just bought a big lot of 7mm bullets...
